Hmm, are we being prepped? That's true, @shiney, but stock market crashes lead (or allow, maybe) govs to do things that affect everyone, eg introduce austerity measures. Interest rates on savings tend to dive, badly impacting pensioners in particular. For quite a while there has been talk of using negative interest rates to boost spending and economic growth, but they need an excuse to sneak these in.

I only just started listening to it but the speaker does something that I can't stand and that is he speaks too fast. So I just shut it down. I used to run a business club where we had a speaker at our monthly meeting. The speaker was always told not to speak too fast otherwise I would stop the talk. Listeners need to absorb what is being said and not strain to listen. One of our group used to teach public speaking and he used to emphasise the point that for a speaker to get through to their audience properly that must speak at a gentle pace - but not too slowly. This is a big problem for me as my brain doesn't comput very fast and to make things worse is some people speak as they voice is coming out of a tiny speaker and posh words mean nowt to me as i don't under stand them a my brain stuggles with them as i don't understand Basicly i'm a thick git

I know what you mean @shiney when you say you just ignore the entire post if you don't get the acronym but there seem to be more and more of them used these days in every sphere of life. It doesn't always help either when words suddenly change their meaning....."hack" is a good example. Originally it involved an axe or similar tool and physical force. Then it was someone "hacking" internet accounts. Most recently, "hack" describes a hint/tip. On a slightly different "Whaatt" angle - the decision to expect all immigrants to this country to be able to speak English to A level grade - simple enough I'd have thought. Just have to learn So, You know, Like, Wrongdoing, Going forward ( add your own favourites ) - ensure you scatter them liberally throughout every sentence and finally gabble without drawing breath as that is, apparently, really vital when speaking English Just seen the post about Speed Speaking......not alone then.

I am when it comes to words even as you say about words suddenly mean something else, i was talking to someone that was talking about "Shed Breaks" i was thinking it wanted some maintence but after a few minutes it's was all about they're shed was broken into, i was even called a idiot because i didn't know and with my hearing and can't speak english it can be fun
I wouldn't get that either; I'd immediately classify it along with City Break and Mini Break and think they were doing an extreme form of staycation.
What is A level English? When I was at school there was English Language - grammar and vocabulary - to O level and then you'd continue to A level studying Literature. Are immigrants supposed to be able to quote and discuss Chaucer/Shakespeare/Austin/all the poets/modern literature? Very useful in daily life. For the exam we also had to write an essay on some arbitrary subject and do a comprehension exercise. That last skill is a good skill to have but not one I've noticed being prominent in any politician ever asked a question to which they inevitable reply off topic. @Jiffy not thick or stupid so stop it with the negative. Just one of many who process words and language differently but can communicate perfectly well.
Perhaps I'm used to it, but not a problem for me and a similar speed to many today in the broadcast media. I know I should talk to more flesh and blood humans, but why bother them.
@Obelix-Vendée a good question re A level English. I can only assume those who have decided on that interpretation couldn't think of an alternative. I don't know if the current A level exams include a section on how to respond to a question without actually answering it or whether that is a solely an exam which all politicians must take and pass. Unless it has changed in recent years, it's also worth considering some of the questions which people need to be able to answer correctly when applying for British citizenship.
