@Ergates our "fixed" line actually come thru the modem and we now have fibre optic cables. The modem does our wifi and we could, if we chose, get a vast array of French TV thru it but we use Sky to get English language TV.

We have thick stone walls here so the mobile phone signal is pretty poor unless I find a sweet spot by a window or on the front doorstep which is not practical in winter. I mostly use mine for texting and it is mostly turned off. It never comes down the garden with me or up to my sewing room but that does have a fixed phone extension.

I've got a landline but I might get rid of it when Virgin change it over, I only kept it because it works in a power cut, not much point if the new system has to run off the hub.

Ben(dog) ate part of the hand set one day when I went out just a few weeks after I got him, so its a bit tatty now anyway.

That's the annoying thing about the new 'super duper' internet version of the land line  but when they do change you over you want to try and get them to give you an eight hour backup battery with it. They originally said there would be a 30 minute backup (not a great deal of use) but now have three hour ones and, supposedly eight hour ones. Get yourself listed on the 'At Risk' register and you are likely to get the higher backup.

That is pretty much my situation exactly, only my 20 yr old Nokia died so I now have an old-lady's Doro. :) I have never received a call on it, so have no idea what it sounds like when ringing. :dunno: I keep telling myself I must start using it to get some practise in. The signal here is not good either. If I do get a smart phone, I'll probably use it for texts mostly.

They changed us over, but we have lost our call ID, doesn't even show the number just says incoming call. I've been on to them an engineer wad supposed to look into it but still not working.

Yeah, but I'm not sure I'm going to bother, I keep paying for the landline but cant remember the last time I used it, the calls cost extra whereas the mobile is in the package so-called free calls, nothing is free, but I dont like paying twice.

I think BT charge £8 extra for unlimited calls.

I only pay £10 for the mobile, includes unlimited texts and calls and a large amount of data that I've never got near using each month.

We are still on a mix of fibre to the box up the road, and ( underground) copper cable to the house. Big distances between houses in the village, so will be expensive to run any final fibre connections, maybe not cost effective. No dates yet for digital voice. At some stage, I’ll have to upgrade my Nokia, as it is only 2G. I still don’t think I’ll get a smartphone though. OH has one with a monthly allowance of texts and data, and hardly uses any of it. Mainly uses it for PlaneFinder, if we are out for a walk and want to know what’s flying over! Same price as yours, @pete. I have a pay as you go Tesco deal, I just top it up when it gets low. £10 lasts me for months, mainly spent on ‘I’m on my way home, can you pick me up at the bus stop?’ Or ‘Where are you? ‘ when I mislay him in B and Q!

We have Home Phone Saver plan with BT, which gives you landline and unlimited calls. It's about £22.86 pm. Seems reasonable. We use our landline a lot - mainly appointments these days!

With DV I would want that battery backup as it's incoming calls that are more important. We'll have to put ourselves down as vulnerables now.

I also have an old 2G Nokia and will be rather annoyed at having to get another phone. We hardly get 4G here. 3G is better. 2G is good. But we have noticed lately that both me and hubby have had to refresh the network connection on our 2G phones. We were unable to receive texts for logging on. They worked after doing that.

My GP practice sent me a grumpy SMS message saying a blood test was overdue and to book an appointment. It's been overdue for over 12 months and this the first communication from them on the topic.

I think the NHS uses special AI calendars that measure months as days, thereby producing waiting list data that looks entirely reasonable. ;)
