My dad had a car in 1960 and I was 10 yrs old.
I can remember the petrol cost 6 old pennies for a gallon, and then it went up to 9 pennies and then to a shilling. That was in the 60s.
I can remember it going up to half a crown in the mid - late 60s and my dad was moaning about it. I can remember the price displayed on the old petrol pump in the local garage. It said 2/6 for everyone to see.

BUT ! Someone on another forum insists it was 5 shillings per gallon in 1960, and even Google says it was 5 shillings ... BUT IT WASN'T.
If it was my dad would have only got 4 gallons for £1 but he paid much less. I can remember it and my memory is not failing !

Does anyone remember what the price actually was, because in our local garage it was as I said above, and this chap is annoying me.

I cant remember petrol ever being 6d a gallon.
My earliest memories are around 5s a gallon and I think that was 60s early 70s perhaps.

I remember cigarettes were 5/2d for 20 back in the early 70s, I doubt petrol was far from the same price per gallon.

Of course it all got sodded up when we went decimal and then they forced litres onto us, so prices just spiraled, as nobody had a clue what they was paying.

I remember when I first had a car in 1970 petrol was a few shillings per gallon but I can remember 2/6 being on the front of the petrol pump in the local garage in the mid 60s, and my dad complaining about it. I distinctly remember it, and some time before that the pump said 1/-

According to an AA chart, petrol was about 5 bob a gallon in the mid 60s.

I can remember my Dad in the 60s rarely putting more than 4 gallons in at a time.
I dont think prices changed much in those days, not like they do these days.

I had an old banger in 1968 (my first car) and my first gallon of petrol was 8 shillings and 6 pence. Oil changes, checking points and cleaning spark plugs. Then fixing the exhaust pipe with gunk, a tin can and wire. Then if an early freeze came and no anti freeze my core plug popped. What joy.

From what I remember it was about 5 shillings a gallon in the late 1960s when I first started driving. I recall the first overnight pay-at-the-pump system where you put a ten bob note (50p) in a clamp type thing, it had to be the correct side up etc. Then you got about 2 gallons out of the pump, enough to half fill my little Mini's tank.

I also remember that a pint of beer was 1/10 and could get a pint and a packet of crisps for two bob 2/- (10 new pence). Given that a pint of beer today is over £5 it's about the same as a gallon of petrol. So either beer has gone up extortionately or petrol prices have remained below inflation.

I looked in an old diary my Mum kept in 1972, she recorded mileage and prices etc. She got 5 gallons for £1.77 so that's 35p/gallon or 7/- in old money.

In 1961 I had my first car and it cost 4/7 a gallon (the cheapest I could find).

The car was a 1940 Morris 8 and cost £15. It needed a lot of work done on it as it was only getting 10 miles to a pint of oil ( don't think it would pass an emissions test now :heehee:) but a friend was a mechanic and sorted it out.

In those days paraffin was far cheaper than petrol, now days it's the other way round.

Thanks for all your replies, but I distinctly remember 1/- being on the front of the pump in a local garage in the early 60s.
Maybe they watered it down
            (that was a joke !)

The petrol was called 'Regular' and there was another one called 'Derv' which was dearer. That pump had a blue shell-shape on top of it. It must have been Shell petrol. I don't know the make of the cheaper one. It had a square-shape glass thing on top.

"Mr Rees the oil" used to come around in a little red van and his paraffin was 3 old pennies for a gallon. My dad used to send me out with a thruppeny bit and a can, to get it from him.

Obviously our local garage in East Lothian Scotland was ripping us locals off. Then if you tried 2 star which was cheaper the engine started pinking (wherever that expression came from I have no idea).

I can remember visiting my parents in 1971-2 and they had a garage at the end of the street. It showed 33p per galleon. We often remark on it these days considering what we pay per litre. I wasn’t old enough in the early 60’s to appreciate ( or otherwise) such things I’m afraid.

Thinking about it, I can remember my dad wouldn't go to any garage for petrol except the one in question, because he used to say they were too expensive. I don't know how this particular garage was able to sell it cheaper, but it did. I can remember thinking when it went up to 2/6 what a ridiculously high price it was.
