The way the world’s going, with mad axe men running wild everywhere, I’m opting to go behind bars where they can’t get me and let the nutters have free run of the outside world where they can kill each other off.

Ah but, in prison @Tidemark, the concentration of nasties and nutters is greater and they might get you with a shiv instead.

No. Let all the nutters out to do their worst on other nutters. We sane ones sit in safety behind bars.

I doubt whetther we would ever have known that "mistaken" releases have apparently been going on for years had it not been for the one that hit the headlines recently.
If you are into conspiracy theories, you may begin to wonder whether some of these are deliberate in order to reinforce the constant demands for better pay, more prison staff, more new prisons - scare the public enough and they may be more willing to accept higher taxes and such like.

I think UK jail inmates do have some positives. We recently had one of our judges strike away the minimum sentence for paedophile crimes and give one of these pigs a slap on the hand instead. Over there, you send them to jail and your inmates are taking care of them. For good.

I think we're talking apples and oranges. I'm talking about heat pumps that are air but produce hot air to circulate through ventilation systems, not heat boilers or radiators.

They still are not enough on their own for our winters so I do not see why our government is pushing them.

Apparently the paperwork to release a prisoner takes an entire day! How complicated can it be? When someone gets a sentence, calculate the earliest release day and put it on the computer system's calendar. If days are subtracted for good behaviour or added for misdemeanours, just input this information as you go along.

@KT53 , your friends with the "just warm" hot water should have got the system checked. Our heat pump has a disinfection programme once a week, heating the water to 50C to kill potential legionella; all heat pumps should do this, as far as I'm aware. The regular water temperature is always "hot enough" for our needs. And if it's an air-to-water system, the radiators will only ever be warm. They work by maintaining the temperature using low temperature water circulation; ours is set to 35C, except when the weather is very cold when we may increase it to 40. It takes some getting used to, if you've had a conventionally heated house - especially the fact that keeping the thermostat set to a constant temperature over 24 hours is more efficient than turning it down at night.

Wouldn't work for me @Liriodendron as we like the bedroom cool for sleeping but the living room warm enough just to sit but not too warm for OH. We have throws for Possum and me in winter, if the cats don't nest there first.

Interesting, so how is the heat from the pump transferred to the air?
I assume it has to use some kind of heat exchanger.

I'm not sure I heard it right, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought I heard a reporter standing outside Wandsworth prison this morning say, they often have a third of staff not turning up in the mornings.
If that's true it's their own fault they are short handed.

You can have your house zoned, as you would with any heating system, with 2 thermostats, @Obelix-Vendée , so you can have the living rooms warmer than the bedrooms - and turn off individual radiators if you like. You just can't have your bedroom warm during the day and cool at night. But most of us don't live in our bedrooms during the day...

@pete staff levels are low to start with and conditions horrendous with inadequate facilities, over crowding and lack of training and protections for dealing with increasingly violent prisoners.

It's a wonder to me that 2/3rds of the staff turn up and don't all go off sick with stress.
