Yes I had that a lot. When the signal was strong the quality was often reported as poor. The Toshiba was particularly annoying for this, because even when the picture appeared fine and I was watching quite happily it would keep putting banners up top and bottom claiming the signal was poor, and keep them up for a few minutes before deciding it was happy again, only to repeat within the next 5 minutes. Really annoying and there was no way to turn that feature off. I stopped using it and watched via a Humax box for years, which seemed much happier with exactly the same signal.

Freeview can suffer from interference from 4G masts and there's a filter you can get that you fit between the aerial socket and the TV. I haven't tried it myself, I just stream everything now. The great thing about streaming is that you're not tied to where the aerial sockets are, you can put your TVs anywhere.

Nearly got flattened in the B&Q carpark today. I was walking along the pedestrian path up the centre, and there was a van on the left of me parked, either right by or partly over the path, I didn't really notice which. Just as I got level with it it suddenly moved and crossed the path right in front of me. The driver clearly didn't look anywhere but directly in front of him before moving.

Do you have to have the box to stream stuff, or is there a way of connecting a smart TV to streaming.

A smart TV works by streaming over the internet, but it might be limited in the number of apps it has available (e.g. iPlayer etc). And often the manufacturer stops supporting them after a few years, so the apps it starts off with don't work any more.

I use the cheapest Amazon stick; if you don't want Amazon then the Roku is a good alternative and you can currently get that for about £20 which is cheaper than the Amazon one. Then you can install your choice of paid and free streaming apps on the box.

OK thanks, I have heard of them but never gone into what the difference is between them and an ordinary smart TV.

I sometime use I player but I always find these things a right pain trying to get the programme you want to see.

We have no masts anywhere near but our internet is too slow for streaming. Not that we have ever thought of streaming anyway.

We don't have a smart tv - it's a Panasonic Viera. But I understand it has a hole at the back and could be turned into one and also connected to a fire stick. My question is what are we going to be able to see for free? It's not that we are tight buggers, but it's the hassle. We have slow Internet connection, but do manage to what webinars just about OK. So is it worth the hassle?

@cactus_girl "What are we going to be able to see for free?" I'm afraid the answer to that will soon be "two thirds of three fifths of nothing". Almost all sport is disappearing behind paywalls. Most decent films have been there for years.

Apparently you can't get BBC channels on Freely, only iplayer. Seems odd.

You have to still be connected via an aerial for the BBC channels as I understand it, @pete, whereas you don't to get the other freeview channels on Freely. I guess the BBC may not consider itself to be under the freeview umbrella, due to the licence fee.

I'm struggling to see any advantage over freeview for myself.
