I bought it by mistake one day and I can still remember it made my teeth squeak, god knows what it's made of.

Not necessarily - there is a farm in Dumfries & Galloway that is pioneering keeping the calves with their mothers for at least the first 6 months before they are separated; that in turn means they need more animals to keep the cycle going in a profitable manner, but that means less are prematurely slaughtered.

As we regularly have groups of students (of all ages) here I cook their lunches. When they book their classes they are asked what they don't eat and any allergies they may have and whether they are vegetarian or vegan. I then cook the meal accordingly so that everyone eats the same. The two most popular meals are chicken casserole and Thai veggie curry. All meals are cooked totally from the start so I use home grown herbs or roasted and ground spices.

All eggs we have, and Mrs Shiney has a lot, they all come from rescue hens.

I often used to have the vegetarian option back in the 80s and 90s when I was at conferences and similar, it was less popular so you got a bigger portion.

One of the problems with "meat alike" vegetarian/vegan options is the amount of processing and additives required to reach that state.

              Still the same company, @KT53.
It’s possible that your 500gr minced beef was thought to be from a farm in the UK, but you don’t know if that meat is from that farm or if it was mixed with European food mafia meat.
Aldi just sells they don’t produced. To find out where and how your cow has lived until it was slaughtered, you need to follow the route via third-party partners.

I think anyone who eats meat is in denial and kidding themselves if they think the animals dont suffer, of course you can minimalize it but farming has always been pretty brutal in my estimation.
Its best not to think about it and I always get very sceptical when I see programmes like Country File where they tell you how well certain animals are treated before loading them into trucks and selling them at markets and then get their throats cut.

Ah, but they are humanely slaughtered, yeah, of course they are.

I've never forgotten seeing a film of a slaughterhouse in action about 50 maybe 60 years ago. No idea which slaughterhouse or what part of the world it was in but it has never left me. Recent reports of animal mistreatment in various places shows that man is the cruellest of animals.

Yes I read about that one, but it's just one farm. On the other hand the industry wants to bring in the mega-dairies where the cows are kept indoors all the time.

Also an awful lot of meat being sold in supermarkets now is marked Halal, which means it hasn't been stunned before being slaughtered. But someone said a prayer, which is nice.

I would find it very hard to kill a sick or badly injured animal, but I think I could do it.
Killing a heathy animal would play on my mind, so I'm glad I dont have to do it.

Mostly I think people don't really think about it, or want to,because it could drive you crazy if you did.

Only some of them. It's easy enough to read the ingredients. Personally I worry more about things like salt.

The appalling treatment of many animals/birds at abattoirs had been shown on many occasions - mostly by "undercover" reporters. There were suggestions that some of this could be put down to the closure of many local abattoirs thereby causing longer and more stressful journeys towards death never mind how they are treated both prior to and the slaughter methods once there.
I'd like to think that animal farming practises have improved in some places but the Red Tractor misleading labelling recently reported in this country does not exactly encourage this belief. Cheap, cheap and cheaper is what the retailers are after and what their customers come to expect.

Just been reading an article about a working couple with 3 children needing a pre-tax income of £71,000 a yr to match a similar non-working family receiving all available benefits. This is just madness.

And then there's the taxis for migrants situation. Was listening to a driver explaining he was sent from Gatwick to Reading to pick up a migrant and take him to a dentist a mile and a half away. He was waiting to return the migrant to his hotel, but was told to return to Gatwick and a second driver was sent from Heathrow to Reading to collect the migrant. All this cost hundreds of pounds. What the heck is going on? :dunno: Utter madness.
