If they revalue property how do you take into account the people who live on state pension in a house they bought 60 years ago and is now worth £5 million

On the way to Dyrham Park, M4 westward, I saw that there was no traffic on the other side and the police had used green covering over 200 metres long. While passing, I saw in the mirror around 10 forensic staff looking for objects on the embankment.

The way back took us 2 hours for something that is normally done in 40 minutes.

@mac12, well, all the bands would move upwards. It would be the cluster of properties currently bundled together in Band H that would be spread out more into new bands and see their Council Tax rise.

I think there are a lot of people in the same situation here however taxes should be applied equally to them. They wouldn't sell the house for less than the new value. Instead, the tax should be accrued, interest free, until the house is sold by them or their heirs and paid out as any lien would be. The people can stay in the house. They or their heirs could get the proper sales price and the taxes would be paid out on closing the sale. Win, win, win.

Been there done that, the size of your house has little bearing on how much you cost the council.

That's true. But if taxes need to be raised, skim them from the people who have hitherto enjoyed being in a very wide Band H, IMV.

Most Council Tax round here goes on schools and adult social care. I use neither, but that's how the system works.

A fair system would be great, @ViewAhead, but I don’t get the idea that this lot are capable of that. It needs to be planned carefully, and introduced in a sensible and measured fashion. So far, all I’m seeing is yet another knee jerk reaction against the perceived ‘rich’, badly thought out with no consideration of any unforeseen consequences.

I'm sure you used the first one at some point, and you never know you might need the second one at some point also.

A fair system for council tax will never be achieved as there is no way to make the market value equitable to size of property and family or use of council services. There are too many variables that affect the values.

Around here there are areas that have suddenly changed from non-desirable to desirable areas with the accompanying value changes. That has nothing to do with how big the property is or what amenities they may have in the property.

The value of our property has risen disproportionately as we suddenly became part of the 'commuter belt'. The individual value of ours went up from not very much (we bought as an almost derelict building - the only way we could afford it) to a reasonably higher price because we spent decades improving it by hard work and spending our taxed income on doing so.

A non-personal affect on property values locally was that the school in our village (we're not in the village but a mile outside it) managed to get a few good teachers about 35 years ago (just before the 1991 council tax valuations changed) and people with more money wanted to move into the village in order to get them into the school. The value of the houses for sale in the village went up about 20% in three months and pricing out young married people in village from being able to buy.

There are numerous reason for the change in value and these aren't (not possible to be) taken into account.

I just will never understand why council tax has anything to do with the house you live in regarding size or area.
Admittedly some areas cost more than others, but they shouldn't.

Exactly the same in our village @shiney. The knock-on effect of the school thing is that word has now got around and more people are settling here that can't quite afford to buy in the really desirable "Cheshire triangle" locations which are nearby. They move in and immediately remodel their houses into something that just doesn't fit with the area but looks a bit like the place they couldn't afford in the first place :noidea:

Thing is, it now appears that those taxes did NOT need to be raised... she lied.

@Escarpment Calves are not automatically killed. Females will be added to the herd. Male calves are often raised for beef. Times have changed, at least in the UK, from the days when bull calves were locked into crates and fed on milk for a few weeks to make the meat pale before being killed for veal. Very little veal is produced in the UK, in part because people don't want it.

That depends on the breed though doesn't it? Breeds that are used for dairy aren't generally the same breeds that are good for beef. I believe at least 15% of the male calves are still killed on farm. And being raised for beef isn't much of a consolation, especially if it's in one of the big factory farms.

True, but my point was you cannot base Council Tax rates on how much the occupants of a dwelling may be using the services. So, the fact that the owner of a £20 million property may not even be in the country most of the time is wholly irrelevant when it comes to setting up a system where more is paid on large homes. :)
