Did anybody else's mother slice cucumber and leave it to soak in vinegar? It seemed normal at the time but I can't imagine doing it myself. Maybe it was a Scottish thing?

Yes to marmite & cucumber sandwiches - but not pickled cucumber! I guess they pickled cucumber etc to make it last longer.

Pickled cucumber is the only time I will eat it, prefer it sliced rather than those gherkin type whole ones.

Just cucumber in vinegar sounds pretty awful, bit like a really nice tasty beetroot being dumped in malt vinegar, arghhh.

My father used to do it. He was born in Burma but this was something he used to do in America.

I love gherkins, but prefer if they are sweetish ... like little white cocktail onions.

I'd go back to eating pickled cucumber in preference to Marmite.

Cucumber slices pickled in malt vinegar, yes, I remember those! Occasionally my Mum would slice in onion rings, too. A goodly dollop on your mushy peas....fantastic! Especially with a pork pie, hot from the butchers!

I used to pour some vinegar on to a plate then get a slice of bread and mop it up and eat the bread :dunno::dunno::dunno::dunno::dunno::dunno::dunno::dunno:

I used to make pickled cucumbers by the barrel load (old oak whisky barrels) in the deli. They were very popular. White vinegar, lots of water, salt, bay leaves, few allspice, coriander seeds, mustard seed and chilli.

I used to do the same with freshly squeezed lemon juice. Oh, how I would love the digestive powers of a teen again!

I've known several youngsters whose idea of a Christmas present was a large jar of pickled silverskin onions and often half empty by lunch time.

Been watching the FIFA World Cup draw and it has been painful to watch, drawn out for to long probably for TV advertising in the States. Please FIFA, do not give the States the tournament ever again.

By the time they finish the actual draw, news at 10 will be starting.
