Do you think the forthcoming flu epidemic that is being so widely advertised, yes advertised, is getting us ready for the government's excuse for the NHS not improving.

Or am I just being cynical.

Every yr we get this barrage of scare stories re waits in A&E etc. I'm sure it is just to discourage people from using the service.

We had a school reunion this year in July, it was a reunion for the class of 77-82.
Some of us hadn't seen each other since we left school 43 years ago, some of us went through primary school together.

We have our own FB group and some of us have had smaller get togethers since, either for coffee or for a few drinks. It went down so well, even though many of us were nervous about attending. Yet, there was no need to be, we all got on as if it was only yesterday since we last seen each other. We now plan to do them yearly, quite a few could not make the reunion due to commitments, so we hope that there will be even more of us next time.

We even made the local tabloid.

I thought I'd give another update on the progress, or lack thereof, in the treatment provided for my niece by her GP surgery.
She's been off since mid-September due to agonising pain in her hip/groin. Without ever seeing her the GP decided it was a trapped nerve and has given her all manner of painkillers, none of which have make any difference. She can stand or lie down, but can't sit for more than an hour even with the strongest painkillers.
The GP has finally agreed she needs a scan, something she's been asking for for about 2 months. That's the good news. The bad news is that the GP says she can't be referred for at least a month because she has now been given another, different, set of painkillers. That will mean she'd been in agony for 4 months before she is even referred and who knows how long it will be after referral before the appointment. Then there is the time after the scan for results and any further action. She's unable to work and they are really struggling financially. Her husband works full time, but there is no overtime or anything available to him either.

I'm not against cards, it's a nice gesture and I'm sure some lonely (and not so lonely as well) people get a lot from them. I guess it's a personal thing.
I describe friends as someone I have a close personal connection with, so want them as an active part of my life, or at least more than a once a year reminder I'm still going.

My brother tried to get a gp appointment a few weeks back and it has to be done through a app. The problem was that every time you tried to actually describe what the problem was, it either sent you to another section where you had to basically start again or it did not include any symptoms that remotely fitted what was wrong. In the end he managed to get something that was vaguely in a similar area and sent it through. He got an appointment a couple of weeks later which was then cancelled an hour before with a text that said you need to book a new appointment. Later that day he received a text saying the surgery was overwhelmed and they weren't accepting new appointment bookings until after Christmas and that patients should go to the local walk in centre, which were the ones who told him to sod off in the first place because he needed a gp appointment.

I'm sure that is perfectly normal. :) Personally, I am always astonished that people want to meet up and spend time with each other when they could be happily on their own. I have never once socialised unless it was absolutely unavoidable and I can remember every single occasion in stark detail. When I realised other people do it because they want to, I was completely bemused. Now, I accept it at the norm, but avoid it myself. That said, I like hearing people's news, knowing about their holidays, etc. I just don't want the appalling stress of meeting up with them to learn all this.

@KT53, this is why the NHS is on its knees. Nothing gets dealt with in a timely manner, so people get worse and then need more treatment than they would have. It also damages the economy, due to time off work lowering tax revenues. I hope the new painkillers are more successful for your niece. :fingers crossed:

Couldn't agree more @ViewAhead , I've often wondered why people enjoy being with other people so much too. The (very) occasional times I've had to socialise, I just wanted to go home
I enjoy hearing about other people's doings but that's better at a distance.
Maybe it's good to add that when I am outdoors I frequently chat to neighbours!

But as far as government figures are concerned his appointment was one of the 5 million extra ones they have provided.

Despite the figures quoted for the number of people hospitalised with flu, no %age is offered as to how many of these patients have had a flu jab. Seems a bit odd when the "get your jab" advice is always included in the reports and the fact that the vaccination can take up to 10 days before it is deemed fully effective. Surely if someone is hospitalised with flu, they are asked whether or not they have had their jab and figures would therefore be available ?
