The first recorded use of gay in a homosexual sense was about 1925; although in the mid 19th century it was used to describe prostitutes and in fact the first use in that sense goes back to Chaucer, so throughout history it has had slightly problematic definition along with others.
Surely if it was used to describe something without gender or sexuality it would not be problematic. Although if the context is obvious it shouldn't be problematic in any case.

Whereas Bohemian simply means a way of life away from society's conventional norms and expectations.
So although it could apply to homosexuality, it could equally well describe flamboyant dress sense, or a general non conventional lifestyle or just having no visible means of income.
    Not often used these days.

@KT53, I meant when Kirsty sang it live on TotP she changed several words in that line and substituted "haggard" in place of the original.

Wasn't gay first used by the homosexual community to stand for "good as you"? Framed in that context, it really works, I think.

A game app I play daily wants me to consent to new privacy stuff. So, I dug a bit deeper. They wish to share all manner of data with their affiliates - 1,751 of them! :hate-shocked: If I don't consent, I can no longer play as the page is frozen till I do. Peeved, cos I don't see their ads anyway as about a decade ago I paid a couple of quid for a lifetime without these, so talk of these affiliates having access to improve my experience is complete tosh.

Then it would be an acronym and although some may tell you that is the source, it is actually a word going back to at least middle English that has had a range of meanings over the centuries many of these meanings had a sexual connection. GAY (good as you) would appear to be fairly late 20th century thing.

That's what I meant. They chose a word that already existed to get across their point that they should not be discriminated against on grounds of sexuality. That it also translated as happy, exuberant, etc, and had other connections from previous usage, may have influenced the choice, of course.

Not feeling particularly Gay or Happy or even Hungry at the moment - OH managed to tip whole roast Chicken, Stuffing and Parsnips all over the kitchen floor.
Sorry to accuse "day" but apart from being the shortest one, it isn't the best one so far :frown:

Homosexuality has been referred to as "a lifestyle" in Europe during the times when homosexuality was either a crime or just not talked about.

My male homosexual friend was most amused about the "leading a certain lifestyle" references in the 80s. Visiting a supermarket to buy milk, eggs and carrots was his lifestyle and even though I did enquire about the shape and the size of the aforementioned carrots to add a bit of innuendo, he just laughed.

Thankfully nowadays homosexuality is becoming a non-newsworthy thing and people can just get on building their lives. :)

Just announced on the news, two people died in a collision between a Tesla and a tree.
Surely the Tesla hit a tree, it almost sounds like they are saying that the tree could be responsible, I hope it has insurance.

The bloke clearly seen shooting people in Australia is only a suspect apparently and just an alleged murderer.

But joining two separate pieces of a speech to alter the contents is fair game.

With Musk and Tesla of course it was the tree that caused the accident.

So ...clamour to clamp down on anti-semitism. Good call. Simultaneously, Israel announces 19 new illegal settlements in the West Bank, a violation of international law.

Respect for life and freedom works both ways.

There is no way you can actually justify what happened in Australia but I do feel Israel is actually responsible for putting Jews around the world in harms way.

I've never actually understood why there is a word like antisemitism, I think war is probably what it is in this case.
