Even in Lidl's which is fast most of the time, speed is the thing, well the lady in front of me only that 4 things but it took a long time to go through the till, it was longer than i took to go through with 24 things, as the lady had to find her phone then open up her app for lidl's plus thing, then she had to find her app for her banking/payment thingy, me, straitgh through and pack and i keep up with the scaning, my card ready to go and as i tap my card i say "no lidl's plus, and yes please to a receipt, simple

You ought to try shopping at Costco. Their carts are much bigger and there seems to be a special zapper at the entrance to turn customers into zombies. They shuffle or drag their feet and seem to need the cart as a medical support. And lots also have a phone held to their ear while holding conversations that seemingly have nothing to do with their present task. I had to go in there last Saturday to grab one thing so I didn't take a cart and I stomped through the "oncoming traffic" of shoppers. It's amazing how you can part the crowd when you go at them head on!

Yes, it is amazing how many people watch all of the items get scanned and then suddenly seemed surprised that payment is now required!

Quite few of the large supermarkets have a 'quiet hour' twice a week - I think. In my nearest one I think it is at 10 a.m. but that is too late for me. I get there just before 6 to avoid the rush on the roads and in the store. I can get round twice as fast that way.

The one I use only opens at 6am and there is not a lot on the shelves at that time, often I get there at 10.30 and they are still filling the counters.

On the question of supermarkets who has those crazy doors on the freezer cabinets.
People put their trolly along them while they are looking in one of the doors, the trolly stops anyone else opening about four doors further along, designed by idiots but used by very awkward people.

Friends of ours have recently moved to the UK from Canada. One returning after 25 years in Canada, his wife a Canadian by birth. (Nearly said 'native Canadian' but that might have been misinterpreted. They were shocked to discover that Costco in the the UK is mainly a trade outlet. They were relieved to discover that their card is accepted in the UK despite not being trade. They save a fortune bulk buying there.

Our one officially opens at 6 a.m. but usually opens the doors at 5.45. You can't pickup one of their self check out guns until 6 nor pay for anything until then. I start doing my shopping and chucking things in the trolley and at 6 use the zapper and put them into the bags I have ready. Then carry on shopping. They are filling the shelves overnight so they are full when I arrive. I think that is because it is a major hub for the staff that handle the click and collect orders.
