Yes, I do know it's not the 2026 yet however I am getting geared up to commence starting my seeds for 2026's chillie crop. I usually start the seeds on Boxing day but this time around, I'm going to change up a bit.

I figure I'll delay starting my Shineybrids to the end of January. I'll be watching here to determine the start date so it will coincide with the new Shineyland greenhouse being commissioned. New starts on both sides of the pond for all things Shiney.

I saved seeds from the jalapenos that grew pointing skyward just as the Shineybrids do :th scifD36: which hints at comingling. Maybe I'll get lucky and the seeds will produce true. It is so much easier to see the fruit when it is pointing upward and not hiding under leaves!

Is anyone else planning their chillie starts?

I deliberately grew lots last year so I won't grow as many this year. I'll probably just buy a few plants in April time or so. Good luck with everyone's growing season!

My single supermarket-bought chilli plant produced so much this year that I've got a freezer full and really no need to grow any next year. But I really want to ...

I still have loads of frozen mild de cayenne from this season. Next year I'm growing red and yellow biquinho. Sowing in Feb.

My Chilli season starts on January 25. By the time they germinated, February already offers more daylight.
I kept a chilli from what I bought at a shop, and will give it a try. But like @Hanglow, I will buy 2 plants in April. I prefer the mild ones.

I intend to grow less this year, but I am not very good at being restrained lol.
Hungarian Hot Wax and Anaheim are the two I shall be growing this coming season.

I usually overwinter some of my plants but, of course, with no greenhouse they are having to try and survive in the car port. I'm not too hopeful about that as we have already had some heavy frosts. We tried to keep one plant on the kitchen windowsill but after a few weeks it became infested with with eggs under it's leaves (am guessing on whitefly but not sure) so it is back outside. We have no idea how they come to be there as we never see whitefly in the greenhouse - when the greenhouse was there!

We shall be late with sowing seed as the greenhouse is not expected to be completed until the end of January and then we shall need to run power to it and resite the propagator, work out supports for the staging it will be on and then fill it with the 15 buckets of sand and gravel, full to the top, fit the old heating cables in it, leave it to dry out and for any bugs that have set up home in it, that we don't evict, to emerge. The buckets are sitting under a hedge so will also be full of water. total weight about half a ton - hence the need for supports.

I am thinking about getting rid of the old sand and gravel and getting new but can't think of what to do with it. I don't really have a suitable site for spreading it and certainly cannot physically move it around much as I am :old:. Then the replacements would need to be brought in.

I can't see the propagator being ready until March. So don't know how the new season of chillies will go. :dunno:

I took 2 of the sweet peppers indoors with all of the yellow bacinhos. those will be in their third year now and theyre getting nice and productive.

i will try growing 2 Baccatums again: havana gold and red aji delight. Im told they get bigger than normal chillis. not spicy. scotch bonnets are so cheap at the shop, 1.5£ punnet dried and ground will last me 2 years

If its sharp sand I often use it to open up bought in compost, I can get through a few bags each year, I suppose your biggest problem would be mixing it.

Don't think it was sharp sand but can't remember as it is at least 40 years old. The sand and gravel mix has the heating cable running through it to retain the heat in the propagator. It is waiting in buckets to be used again

I opened up my 3 purchased packets of chilli seeds this morning as a New Year day treat. Purchased from a Chilli growing farm. Total number of seeds 14. Opened up my free packet of seeds from my gardening magazine. Same number. Unbelievable.

I got out three of my 1010 trays and their domes and will be making soil blocks later to start some of my chilies. I'll start my 7 pot yellow, carolina reaper red, chocolate reaper, jalapeno, shineyjalapeno (cross bred- we'll see what happens) , scotch bonnet and ring of fire. I have work to do this morning so it will be a nice way to finish the day. Happy new year peppers!
