Well it became apparent that the "Monster Raving Loony Party" were the sanest lot out there, this gave them nomenclature issues. I mean you can't really be the "Monster Raving Loony but Saner than the any of the others" can you it's a bit of a mouthful.

On the way back from the DIY store, this morning, I passed a mobility scooter with 4 pieces of timber (9 ft x 40mm x 40mm) stuck up in the air behind the "driver".

Thatcher wouldn't have lasted as long as she did if it was a genda thing, she was there a long time and people get fed up with more the same. The so called poll tax riots that were obviously stirred up by her opponents were her downfall IMO.
Then we ended up with the grey muppet.

As for an 18 yr old having to pay it, well back then 18yr olds were working, unlike now, none seem to be even looking for a job until they are around 22, there was a 26 year old graduate spoken about on TV that still can't find a job, really????

I do wonder if the poll tax was just set too high, but I definitely believe in the principle that everyone who uses the services should contribute.

According to recent findings people aged 18 to 24 who are not in education, training or paid employment are to be offered "enticements" to get them into the work sector. Businesses are also expected to offer more opportunities for this age group. What the report didn't go into was the number/type of current employment vacancies. Back in the "old days", if a job opportunity came up, you took it - may well have not been what you had hoped for but at least you were earning something and you could progress from there. Times have changed as have expectations.

@pete, it was a gender thing for many of Thatcher's immediate colleagues though. All those entitled, private schooled, ex-Oxford middle-aged men hated being told what to do by a woman from a lowly background (as they saw it, the argument that getting there on merit should count for more than getting there through monied connections being lost on the recipients of such a easy route upwards). The voters had no trouble with a female PM, however, which is why she lasted so long.

Exactly, @Philippa. I left university with an MA Honours degree in a completely useless subject (only one of the 21 people who began the five year course got a job connected with the subject). Luckily, in those days, all my fees were paid for by HM Govt. But my first job was as the manageress of a dress shop. Two problems arose almost immediately. A. I can’t add up or deal with numbers, so cashing up was a nightmare and B. The first and last dress I ever wore was my wedding dress. I didn’t last long in that job, but it was what was on offer.

The government are saying that they will pay employers £3000 to take on 18 to 24 year olds and train them as long as they can show they have been trying to get jobs. That's not too dissimilar to the original YTS situation but they were younger.

I'm sorry but I cant see that, if it was they would have got rid of her years before, it had nothing to do with voters who was the leader of the party.

It all went wrong when they got rid of technical colleges, there were about five in the local area when I was young, most are housing estates now.

You could attend college and apply for jobs while you were there, or the employer sent you there.
They are talking about offering migrants £40,000 to go back where they came from and now £3000 to companies to employ people.

Something has gone very wrong somewhere.

Maybe they should swap it round - £3k to go home ( they will get their air fare paid anyway ) and £40 k to any business which can usefully employ someone for at least 30 years. Bit too much to expect probably.

She was an outsider. Westminster back then, especially the Tory sector, was a "club". Entry qualifications were money, background, and connections. Drop an opinionated woman into the mix and you are going to get resentment and pushback. And finally, they pushed her out.
