    Scrungee is quite right.
    Just be patient.
Wait untill the fruits are full formed and ripe.
ID will then be so much easier.

Just to show the potential for confusing purple cherry plums with damsons I've been looking back though my pics for some examples.

      1) Cherry Plums 24th July 2010. These are reds & purples (that I've separated from the yellows, yellow/reds, light reds) becasue they make the best flavoured jam & wine, the light reds get eaten raw/used in chutnies and the yellows are used for making golden wine:

      2) Damsons 1st September 2010 (much later than cherry plums) and although this doesn't show it, they are more likely to have a white, waxy bloom on them (it's sloes on the LH side for comparison):

So as you can see from the pics, the darkest purple ones in the bag look very similar to the damsons below.

Hi Iresha, I think the advice of "wait and see" is a good one. By the looks of things (and comments from the previous owner) you are going to need to stock up on sugar, and old jam-jars. Lucky you!! :D

Thanks! Can't wait :yess:. Will post a pic, once I picked them.

Nice comparison Scrungee !! (Seems like you've got a large garden with all sorts of trees. Very impressive :dbgrtmb:)

One small question, out of these 2, what is the best to eat fresh as a fruit? (or do they both better for jams/vine ect, than eating fresh?)

I reckon that the cherry plums make the best eating fruits (and wine), but I'm comparing them with wild damsons that may well be more acidic than cultivated ones, and think damsons make better jam and chutney.

My rule of thumb for picking them around here is that the first cherry plums will be ready from around the beginning of the school summer hols (last week in July) and damsons after they've gone back to school (beginning of Sept), but these things seem to vary from one place to another.
