    Hi all.

    I'm after ideas please.

I'm trying to sort out a holiday. The wife and I like Cornwall, but having downsized my car a bit I can't be bothered with the 10 hour drive, so was thinking of Somerset instead. Still a long drive, but it knocks a couple of hours off.

We like impressive public gardens (Heligan and Eden in Cornwall blew us away), old towns, little fishing ports, boat trips etc. Other than that we're not too particular.

I love my proper cider, so Somerset gets a big thumbs up on that point, as I believe you can still buy proper locally produced cider from some farms down that way, but that doesn't sell it for me because I also have to think about my missus and my 2 year old lad.

Its more sort of areas of interest I'm after, because as far as specific location is concerned I'll just find us a holiday park with all the facilities to use a base.

    What do we reckon?

That reminds me I should bake that cider cake again, which is actually the only cake that I can make successfully!

    All of the above:dbgrtmb:

Watchet is a nice little port to visit, not as busy as Lyme Regis. For a boat trip you'd need to check the tide times as the bristol channel empties out at low tide.

Burrow hill cider is a mile or so from my place, they do cider brandy too.

Dorset & the Jurassic Coast is only a stones throw from Somerset, so if you were staying in the middle you could branch out to both coasts.

Don't go to Chard or Yeovil, full of Chavs.

I was forgetting Exmoor Marley, always worth a visit.

On the far side(west) you could visit Arlington Court,

          National Trust | Arlington Court

There is a big collection of Carriages and the house and gardens. I put a new roof on the Stable Block about 10 years ago & did works to the Cupola.

The kettle will be on at Zigs place Dave:dbgrtmb:

          A bit of variety:

Torre Cider Farm near Minehead in Somerset. All the apples are grown in our orchards or come from old cider orchards in the area.

which is close to The Bakelite Museum and Cleeve Abbey | English Heritage

The National Gardening Show held at Shepton Mallet Showground on 2nd - 4th September The National Gandening Show at the Bath & West Showground

Which, amongst lots of other stuff, includes the Giant Vegetable Competition:
