You're right, I don't think they can think of a proper word for that extreme of behaviour.

There is a big difference between banter havin a laugh and get someone going to being down right rude and abusive.
There is 1 forum i am a member of where it started of with no rules and stayed like it for a few years a brilliant laugh but freedom works both ways and only works if everyone follows a unwritten code, then things changed because people wanted written rules, the same people who wanted the freedom felt the need to restrict the banter it has now died the death, sadly when all was needed was dont feed the trolls.

I actually know a real troll personally. At least I think he's a troll. He matches the description of the thing under the bridge in Three Billygoats Gruff. I.e. he is very big, very muscular despite not trying to be (extremely so), and very challenged both cosmetically and intellectually.

He's a nice lad though, and wouldn't say a horrid word to anyone.

I think its unfair that the word troll has come to mean a nasty vindictive internet user. My mate Dave doesn't even use the internet.

Being a Troll by appearance and being a Troll by nature are two different things, Clueless but I see your point.

Troll is definitely the wrong descriptive word for the person and activities we're talking about.

I think you'd have to invent a new word to describe him .................... Necroleech?

You're right of course. I guess the point I was trying to make, with a bit of humour thrown in (which may have been inappropriate given the subject), is that this chap was not found guilty of, for example, deliberately being argumentative on a forum just to wind people up (someone internet users have come to term a 'troll'). He was found guilty of behaviour far more sinister and sick.

I'm pretty sure the court didn't find him guilty of 'trolling'. I think he was done for inciting hatred or something. The media, as always, chose to insult the intelligence of their audience by dumbing it down as much as they could.

The English language already has a word for this bloke. The word is 'sadist'.
