Went round to Sean the Mod's Gaff, from the other, other forum.

Some complete "Booger" had rendered the outside of his 1880 house with waterproofed cement, keeping the damp in and making it come out in the kitchen in the form of mold & blown plaster.

First thing to do was strip the bottom metre of horrible cement render to let the damp out.

Then, with help from the dog, I went deaf for a while as I had to use a grinder & breaker after the dog had eaten my ear plugs:DOH:

Then, we silently put a perforated pipe in.

And then backfilled with 10mm shingle to form a "French Drain" to keep most of the rain from soaking back up into the wall.

This is what Moderators do to each other, so be warned:OUCH::heehee:

Will be back in the spring, after the frosts to re render it in a breathable lime mortar:thumbsup:

Not good on this Zig but guessing no DPC is the problem and the render was taking the damp up the wall?

You are good on this Pete and you are exactly right:dbgrtmb:, compounded by a cement render all the way up, spring phase will be to seal the cracks in the above cement render, in an ideal situation, i'd strip the lot off & re render in lime but financial constraints and all that:DOH:

Looks like its is a a stone built house.
                Presumably no cavity?

Was it rendered from day one?

Stonework looks a little rough, so I'm guessing it was, but the render was replaced at some point.

Stone built no cavity, they didn't think of that in 1880, evidence of limewash on original surface.

Was it rendered down to the ground, or the result of raising the surrounding ground levels - the bottom of the door in the first pic looks rather close to the external ground level suggesting it could be the latter.

From the waste pipe at GF level and the SVP from above (WCs being usually sited above kitchens) I guess that's the external wall to a kitchen - what's the plaster like behind the cupboards?

I used to enjoy doing damp courses in my early teens, because very few plastering companies do them nowadays (most people want warranties so firms specialize in them to give them the piece of paper) and it always makes a change from doing the same old thing every day.
