Willow wanted to check out a tale from her Ghost book.

There was a simple girl that used to sit in the church porch singing to herself that the Sexton decided to scare one evening by putting a white sheet over himself & running thru the graves. The girl saw him but instead of being frightened, she greeted him, "Heres a soul a coming, who's soul be you? Be you my Granfer's or Granmer's or so and so's (naming someone recently buried) Then she went on, "H'm! Souls be about tonight! There be a Black one too and he's trying to come up to the white 'un and he's comin on so fast that if the white 'u don't take care the black 'un'll catch him"

Terrified, the Sexton fled while the girl clapped and shouted "Run white soul, black 'un'll catch 'ee!"

Just up the road from there, there is another haunted church at Beaminster.

The GhostHunter: Justice from beyond the grave in Beaminster, Dorset

I took the Ziglets there when they were little & told them about the story.

My boy asked where the ghost was seen, and just as I pointed toward the gallery, the clock mechanism in the tower started to whirr quite loudly & the wind made the draught strip on the church door vibrate.

They were out of there so fast:runhills:

Like rats out of an aqueduct.

Further on from there we have the screaming skull of Bettiscombe.

Supposedly from a negro slave that wasn't buried in his homeland, but I talked to the gardener when I was working at the manor & he reconed that the skull was taken from one of the local bronze age barrows.

He gave me some good garlic blubs too:dbgrtmb:

Have a look on an OS map for the old gamekeeper's cottage in the grounds of Slape Manor Estate around here, to the east of the Manor (marked 'A') where the track ends by the river. You can see it on satelite view if you zoom in just right of centre:

                  Map - satellite view

Here's a map showing the footpath to take from near the bridge at Netherbury heading South to Slape Manor that goes past River Cottage:
