Bring back flogging, National Service etc etc.

BBC News - Burglar abuses Leeds victims in letter

“A convicted teenage burglar who was forced to write a letter of apology to a family whose home he targeted has abused his victims in writing.

West Yorkshire Police said the thief, who cannot be named, wrote the letter describing the family as "stupid" and blamed them for the burglary.”

Do you feel any empathy for the burglar? How terrible he has been forced to write a letter. I’m thinking of complaining to my MP that children are forced to use a pen and paper in this day of electronic enlightenment and political correctness. Surely he should have been allowed to send a helpful text to his victim, such as this:

    hi victim
i do not now y i is txting u this
    u is dumb & thick
    all yr fault anyway
    cu never lol
    yrs sincerely, a burglar

Sorry JWK but that reads like a guy straight from University putting forward a new Community Initiative against Burglary.

In the real world, having gone to the trouble to make the offender write the letter, the authorities would at least have ensured he produced a reasonable letter.
If I had been in charge when that letter was produced I would have considered he needed to return to court for further action, as this will be part of his Parole/Community Service actions.

If it's genuine the Authorities are the ones who need action taken against them.

Yes I agree with you gcc, the only good thing is the letter is being used by the police to show how burglars think and for people to take some basic precautions. Here is a quote from the link above:

Ch Insp Jones said: "The contents of the letter are disgusting but it does highlight the cold and dispassionate way burglars select a property to target.

"The most straightforward thing is to remember to lock your door when you're in the house and keep downstairs windows closed, particularly if you're out of the house or in another room."

Why am I not surprised!! It seems that nobody has the balls to stand up to these young thugs, they just let them off with stupid sentences that only serve to make them feel like they have won, which they have!!
Bring back flogging? absolutely, but they wouldn't dare!!!!

saw a notice in shop in cambridge today with pics of a hooded teenager holding a brick

the hooded teenaged threw the brick through their large front shop window late at night ... CCTV caught the images and the teenager was identified

he got off without having to pay... cost the shop owner £300 towards the window (not sure if the window costs £300 or if the insurance excess was £300)

            sad

a few months back, some kids from another village ran rampage through ours .... smashed car windows with a hammer .... my Ford Transit's passenger window was smashed ... I got off lightly .... a car down the road had all the windows smashed (including the front and back windscreens)

            they never caught the teenagers

Flogging or Borstal BUT PLEASE NOT National Service
Good guys have enough problems without having to live with thieves
Yes you can disipline them, but a leopard never changes it's spots

Experienced them once, In the messdeck you could leave a weeks loose change on your locker top for a month and every penny would be there a month later

Until these scrotes visited, GONE, easy to find out who
A good sorting out took place, and the following month yes it was taken again

Not just theft, but filth and hygene, the usual messdeck punishment for this was a wash by the rest of the lads using brillo pads
Some learnt and realised a daily shower was normal and the thing to do when living and sleeping 48 men to a 400 square foot room

Some still did not learn :-(
This became known as bullying and anyone doing it would be chucked out with loss of all pension rights and pay,Now the dirty thieves had won

So do not wish these people to be sent to the services, the proud soldiers, sailors and airmen do not deserve it

Military style camps and disipline YES, Even provide good employment for ex service men retired at 55 and on the heap

Jack McHammocklashing (off on me tangents)

Is that letter for real? There's something about it which doesn't ring true. Maybe it's the lack of four letter expletives. I have a feeling that the genuine article would go something like:

              Dear treetreetreetree

I ain't treetreetreetree bovvered. treetreetreetree off, you treetreetreetreetreetreetree. Hope you die of sumfink nasty.

              Yours sincerely

It does smack of the urban myth, doesn't it?

For what it's worth this is what I learnt the hard way, after being burgled.

                1. Always hide your back door keys in a place where the burglars will not easily find them i.e. not in the kitchen drawer. If they can't unlock the door, it makes the exit harder and limits the stuff they can take out quickly, so you may not lose as much. You've got 5 lever mortice locks, of course.

2.Always keep the garden gates padlocked so it's harder to get in without attracting attention and harder to get stuff out.

3.Don't have any curtains. (Sorry, not practical, I know) The first thing they will do on entering a room is draw them so they can do what they want without being seen. If they can't draw the curtains it's riskier for them to turn the lights on and they can't find stuff fast.

4.Keep up-to-date back-ups of important files on laptops and PCs and keep them in a safe place, possibly away from home.

                5. Take your handbag and front door/car keys up to bed with you at night, don't leave them in the hall.

                6. It's worth hiding stuff if you are going away on holiday, burglars are only in the house for a short time and will be far more likely to take stuff that's obvious and on show.

                7. Don't leave the back door open when watching TV in the front room on summer evenings.

8.If building work - eg double-glazing installment - is going on in a nearby house it may increase the likelihood of burglary as sounds of breaking and entering will be masked or disregarded.

9.Don't leave anything in the front or back garden which can be used as a tool - in my case a big pebble to break through the stained glass panel and a plant pot to give them a leg up.

Remember, most burglars are stupid young chancers, they won't be seasoned professionals unless you happen to live in a stately home.

                  Bring in conscription

we had that in south africa ....

I truly believe that my forced 2 years of national service changed me completely....

went in as a rebel (I was always up to no good during my school days and my parents even sent me to an expensive private boarding school to try sort me).... that made it worse

came out after 2 years of military service a lot wiser and more focused on life ...

It really seems silly to me the way they just turn a blind eye to it and tell us that crime is going down!! who do they think they are kidding?? I don't think there has ever been so much violence on the streets as there is now, practically every day you hear that someone has been attacked or stabbed!!! but NOBODY does anything about it???

Maya sometimes lies behind my chair when I am on the computer. The door bell rings - she runs to the top off the stairs barking - waits for me to go down first and open the door. When the coast is clear she comes down stairs and gives the guest a doggy welcome :doggysmooze::doggysmooze::doggysmooze:
Luckily we are clean out of mad axe murderers in this area :D
