Cheers for the heads up Val, just unplugged mine, only get spam on it anyway.
Why do the providers insist on you having a landline as well as broadband? I'd much rather have just the broadband & not the timewasting double glazing salespeople?

Your typical computer radiates microwaves these days, albeit at very low levels (a CPU with a clock speed of 1.8GHz needs a clock pulse in the microwave range).

If you have a wireless router in your house (for wireless internet), that is radiating in the microwave band.

If you live near an airport, or are at the coast anywhere near shipping, you will be exposed to microwaves from the radars.

If you live in the middle of the Amazon rainforest or the Sahara dessert, or anywhere else for that matter, then its just cosmic background radiation to worry about, which if I remember right, is considerably more intensive than regulations allow radio transmitters of any kind to operate at without special licensing.

So in other words, although these various gadgets radiate microwaves, the level that they radiate at is almost certainly completely harmless and in any case, is insignificant compared to what you'd be exposed to anyway.

All that said, there are good reasons why we see reports about these 'harmful' emissions. The most obvious one is public paranoia (or erring on the side of caution in what is essentially the unknown, given that it is still regularly the subject of research). But also the airwaves are full. There are many people and organisations that are rightly concerned about the amount of radio transmitting gear there is, just because it all interferes with each other. A lot of people would have much easier lives if we could persuade about half the world's population to throw away any radio transmitting gear they have lying around.

Zigster - you can register your details on TPS and Silent Call Guard which will stop the bulk of the calls. I very rarely (if ever) get spam calls. Helps that my number isn't listed as well :)

NOTE: The above are example products only.

The reason I ask is you probably have, two use microwaves, the other two are just plain old radioactive.

BUT I should point out the levels are so low, its considered safe.

oh, had an x -ray ever?................

One more thing, unless you live in a lead lined house, microwaves and radiation will pass strait through the walls, so even if you don't have a DECT phone, if your neighbours have...................

        Just don't worry about it.

I actually know that my neighbours don't have one. The microwave cooker you use it and then turn it off. An X ray only lasts a few seconds, I hardly use my mobile phone but these DECT phones are pulsing away ALL the time probably in close proximity to the occupant of the house, I just can't feel happy about them but thank you so much for trying to put my mind at ease!!!

I seem to remember from physics at school that there are three broad types of radiation, alpha, beta and gamma. All of which bombard us from space 24/7. Alpha is easy to stop if I remember right. Beta is electromagnet radiation if I remember right, and can be reduced to insignificant levels by a few inches of lead. Then there's gamma, the nasty stuff such as what comes off the likes of uranium and other radioactive metals, and the kind the floods in from space all the time. If I remember right the conclusion was that nothing stops gamma radiation, and it just passes straight through everything. In fact, I remember this coming up in conversation when I was at college studying electronics 'specialising' in radio (the course wasn't advanced enough to produce specialists really). One day the lecture went off on a tangent and the lecturer gave us his theory to explain sightings of ghosts. He said that seeing as gamma radiation passes through everything, including the earth, it is possible that as it passes through a person on one side of the planet it could carry an image right through to a person on the other side of the planet. He was a cracking character our electronics tutor:)
