Ladies and Gentlemen of the Forum.

I hope you can all join us in this thread from the close of business on Friday night to raise a glass or two to celebrate the lifetime achievement of Gardeners Corner's most popular member, Jack.

Our only Sub Mariner is taking a well earned break from working life in order to further his new vocation, gardening, so come along tomorrow night & we'll break out the emergency GC Rum, just don't tell Daisees which filing cabinet we hide it in:snork:

Top Ten tips to the newly retired:

            1. Relax for the first few days

            2. Get out of bed at the same time as you did when working

            3. Get washed every day and clean your teeth

            4. Don't get into conversations with the tele-marketers

            5. Don't start going to church if you didn't go when
you were working. This will only depress you.

            6. Get to know your neighbours again

            7. Don't join clubs set up for retired people (depressing)

            8. Stay physically active

            9. Don't lose your sense of humour

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST - AFTER TWO WEEKS

            10. Get off your lazy backside and go look for a part-time job.

I'll make the cake. We can all have a large slice because virtual cake has no calories at all. Congratulations, Jack. Now you can have a great time in that garden of yours!

Scrungee, reading your post reminded me of my late neighbour, Peggy. After her husband died, she joined the senior citizens' club at the local church. She hated it: 'full of miserable old people who just sit around, ducks,' was her verdict. Peggy was then seventy eight; many of the club's members were in their mid sixties. She soon sorted out a way for her to enjoy things, however. She took over the kitchen, cleaned it from top to bottom, re-organised everything and made sure everyone got a proper brew and a nice slice of homemade cake instead of the rubbish they'd been putting up with until she arrived. She also acted as waitress, so none of the poorly sixty year olds had to get up. Peggy lived to be ninety-one.

Clare, that is a lovely tale. I get the feeling that Jack will find plenty to keep him off the streets. The most precious bit is - he will have the freedom to make the choice as to what hemight like to do or not to do. I am started to get excited already!! Now,what to virtually wear.....

I'll give you a month Jack - before the OH starts telling you to spend more time in the Garden! - or anywhere but under her feet! (and stop drinking so much tea.)

I've already said I'll cook a curry for the party :dbgrtmb: . How hot do you virtually want it? :)

I'm sure Jack has a lot of things already planned.

it's time to make money Jack

many people who retire, take up their hobby more seriously and end up making loads of cash ....

My dad worked a 9-5 office job at a company for over 25 years .... when they made him retire, he started doing odd jobs (building/tiling etc).... he had to get out ... he was bored and my wom was working on his nerves all day

4 years later, he owned a construction company and had 14 full time staff in his employ and made bucket loads of cash and he was extremely happy as he was doing something that interested him

his only regret was that he should have started sooner

so, perhaps we will see Jack's landscaping services soon?
