With a child and a dog running round the place, I have to accept that I am never going to have a lawn, however I would like the grass to look a wee bit better than it is now, and to have less weeds.

On a bit of an impulse yesterday morning in Tesco, I bought a box of Evergreen 4 in 1. Firstly, is it any good, or have I wasted my money? Also, I notice that it needs to be watered in (not going to be easy with a hosepipe ban), so do I just plan it that I spread it a day or so before its due to rain?

I've not seen Evergreen 4 in 1. Is it a weed and feed? Also is it granular?

If it's granular put it down before rain. It is best to do it if you have a couple of days of rain afterwards as it takes time to dissolve and reach the roots.

You haven't wasted your money, Evergreen products are usually very good. :)

If watering in is a problem for you, store it and use next year. Meanwhile you can buy a liquid weed and feed, that can be diluted and put down in dry weather. No need to water in after. :)

It is a granular weed and feed - a bit sad, but I remembered an advert with a singing frog which is one of the reasons I bought it

I suppose I could water it in with a watering can, but it would take ages, so unless I can time it just before it rains, I think I will go for your idea of a liquid weed and feed - any particular type I should look out for?

I'm actually going back to a liquid weed/feed next year, I find it easier to judge how even it is. I put mine down in a watering can, if you do the same be careful not to use it for watering plants after unless you wash it thoroughly with soapy water first. You can also by liquid feed that attaches to a hose, but I've not used this before.

At a guess I would think Evergreen produce a liquid one. Verdone produces a very good weedkiller but I'm not sure if they do a weed/feed.

I don't remember the singing frog! :heehee:

I've used the Evergreen 4 in 1 weed and feed on 2 gardens recently ....

you have to be careful not to over dose (don't use more than the 35g/square meter), as if you do, you get blackened grass

it works fine for moss and broadleaved weeds .... in one garden, I had to use 2 applications though, but there were loads of weeds and moss ...

the nitrogen content is not very high compared to other feeds, so if you use it now, it's best to use something in a month or two like scotts lawn builder which has a higher nitrogen content to green up the lawn .... I will wait till the wimbeldon tennis (it always rains heavily during that period) .... I have a feeling that we may be entering a dry period until then

I too am slowly switching to liquid seaweed/fish fertilizers for lawns ...

I used it last year on my back lawn and a few weeks ago on the front.

It certainly blackens and kills the moss. You then have to scarify all the dead stuff out, which can be a real pain.

As for replenishing and feeding, I`m still out on that one. Not 100% convinced. That could also be down to the quality of my lawns though as the moss is worse than ever. I can`t knock the stuff though as Evergreen has a good reputation. Maybe just doesn`t work for me.

thats what I feel .... good for moss and broadleaved weeds, but lacks nitrogen, so you need to feed again ... and if you are heavy handed, you will have black grass ...

as for scarifying the moss ... no matter what product that you use that kills moss, you still have to scarify the dead moss (and sometimes overseed)

there are better products on the market that kill weeds and makes the grass green ... this was the 1st year that I used it .... doubt if I will use it again, but B&Q, Homebase and tesco never had any other at the time I bought, and I should have driven to a garden centre instead

Thanks all - I will need to measure it out carefully then (must confess that I was going to shove a paw in the box and just scatter it  ), and will wait until such times as there is rain on the horizon before I do it. :)

Sorry to sound thick, but by scarify, I assume you mean rake out the dead stuff?

I also use my hand ... and I'm a bit heavy handed

before I applied it, I googled and found that many people were complaining about burning their lawns, so I was a bit careful

as for scarifying .... yes, you need to rake out the moss when it dies .... search on youtube for scarify lawn .... loads of videos showing you how

I applied this last Saturday, before the rain was due overnight, and it appears to have had no effect at all despite being well watered in with all the rain this week. How long does it take to do anything?

It took mine a week or so to get going. Give it a little longer. You'll notice the grass start to green up before it gets to grips with the weeds. :)

Hoping all this rain won't spoil the effect. I put the granules down on Sunday, its hasn't stopped raining since :(

Believe me! Rain won't be a problem, I live in one of the wettest places in the country, in fact we've had torrential rain all day today and it's still not letting up. I put mine down three weeks ago and it's still working. :)
