I love Trip Advisor. It makes fantastic light reading.

The other day I was having a nose at some reviews for a hotel we passed on the way to our own when we were on holiday. It was very bling - think Chigwell with sunshine - so I was curious to see what the clientele thought. Most of them seemed to like the place, but there was still the perennial problem of people shoving towels on sun loungers at five in the morning and then hardly using the damn things. This sort of behaviour particularly offends Brits, most of whom - unless they happen to be bankers - still have a well developed sense of fair play. Our mothers spent years teaching us not to be selfish and that no one likes people who won't share. We just can't believe it when we meet big kids who don't play by the rules.

Anyway, at this particular establishment, it seems that the Brits decided to stage a rearguard action. They went around shoving the offending towels off the sunbeds and staged a lie-in. They then formed an elite pool police corps:-

Sunbeds - if everyone played fair I am sure there would be no problems! People were putting towels down before 8am and not arriving at the pool until 4pm, after probably being at the beach for the day, out and about or even at one of the other pools - disgraceful behaviour! My friend and I soon cottoned on to this, and we removed their towels and lay down for the day! No-one kicked up a fuss - how could they, they could hardly go and complain!

We, along with a few other Brits became pool police for they remainder of the week, and advised other people to remove towels and plonk themselves down.

Might be worth a booking just to watch the pool cops in action. :)

A number of places we've been to have had notices by the pool stating that sunbeds that are left unused for 30 minutes will have their towels stored for them by the pool attendant. All of them carried out this policy. :dbgrtmb:

Although I read (and write) reports on trip advisor I find you have to view them with caution - but they're usually quite entertaining.

Think I am going to get my Avatar to change her clothes soon, I think her bum has to be tired of all that swinging by now. Lets see how hot I can dress her up just for you Zig.

Anyway, this month, I am navigating around Trip Adviser to find great eating spots on Oregon Coastline where I will be roaming in early August. Also checking Food and Wine site for their chef suggestions in that area. Bottom line, it takes just as much time to work off the fat with bad food as it is with good food, so its got to be good regional food. Making my list. The fish out there is great, so that is high on my list. Also the oysters are wonderful. So looking forward to this trip.

I love them. You get very interesting insights into what makes or breaks other people's holidays. For example, the number of lavatories a hotel provides has never particularly interested me, but the modest facilities on offer clearly ruined the holiday for one of my fellow guests.

I 'do' Trip Advisor' as we eat out about three times a week so mainly for the restaurants but also for the 5* places we stay when we have our mini holiday every year.

I find some reviews helpful and others completely off the wall.

            I am truthful.

Apart from using t/a (I'd look ridiculous in the T shirt :heehee:) I have also used a bit of subterfuge that has achieved good service. To be fair, most places have given good service anyway.

One of the jobs I used to do was similar to 'mystery shopping' where I was contracted by the owners to write a report on the business (service industries only). Nowadays, when we are away with friends, if they think the service isn't really good enough, they usually have a 'private' :WINK1: chat with each other where they can be overheard by management. Their chat consists of wondering whether I'm writing a report on the place or whether I'm just visiting. :snork:
