    I grew Shirley last year (seeds from Kristen thanks :blue thumb:) but found them bland, so haven't tried them this year.

    I think you're right about lack of sun Kristen.

    I agree about the lack of sunshine.

    Those of mine that have ripened so far seem a bit tasteless. Even the usually reliable Gardener's Delight seems to be slightly bland this year.

        My Sungold have really taken off now and cropping really well. It's the first time I've grown them but I won't be repeating next year, they don't have enough flavour for me. I've not found anything yet that beats Gardeners Delight, but they have sulked this year.

            Don't give up on Sungold.Usually they are the tastiest of the cherry tomatoes.
            I think it might have something to do with the weather.

                I used to grow Alisa Craig alongside Moneymaker for years, it was only when I bought a packet of seeds aimed at encouraging kids to grow toms with 5 different colourful/tastier varieties that made me realise both (Money Maker & Alisa Craig) were a little bland. It was a long time ago mind you. It would be good to hear from somene that's grown it this year.

                To be honest, I am inclined to take your opinion as your advice has been nothing but spot on for everything else :)

                I might keep them and grow a few plants and use them as my 'sauce' tomatoes as I planned to this year (basically cook them up into a sauce with onion, garlic etc and then freeze in portions for use through the winter) - then I can have my other two varieties for direct use through the summer?

                The other thing I could do is bring on loads (as I did this year) and do a car boot sale or something and sell them (50p a plant?)

                  Could do. I think 50p a plant is cheap, and I wouldn't want to grow a plant for that little!

                  A packet of Tomato see will last 3 years or so, (before the seeds give poor/no germination), so I eke mine out! I buy nearly all my seeds when the garden centre discounts them down to 50p per packet, and most last me several years.

                  (I sow them in 1/4 sized seed trays, often 3 or 4 varieties per tray, and hand-place each seed 1/2" -1" apart with a pencil - bit fiddly, but each seedling has room to itself and I only use a bit more seed, to allow for failures, than I actually plan to grow)

                  So you could grow a few next year, then germinate the lot the following year to sell as plants - if you find you don't like them!

                  JWK has turned his nose up at Shirley, as has MacH-L, so I think I need to look around for something better next year. I'm figuring to buy a packet of everything anyone has said is any good and just grow 2 plants of each :) I can fit about 20 plants in the greenhouse, so that would give me 10 varieties to try.
