And you thought you were safe from floods on a hill?!!

The flats' foundations in Newburn were badly damaged after heavy rain deluged the area.

Mick Murphy, technical director of Newcastle City Council, said the flats at Spencer Court were "extremely unstable" and the council was waiting for a break in the weather so the damage could be assessed. "I have never seen anything like this in 33 years of civil engineering experience," he said.

Concrete piles beneath the foundations have been exposed, he said, exacerbating an earlier problem following the collapse of a culvert on private land.
Residents from the flats and nearby Mill Vale have been evacuated and a cordon set up.

I saw that in the news a few days ago; shocking!!!

 

hmm good thinking John , we have a Mill Lane near us as well . Fortunately I live up the hill next to it. It has flooded very badly there in the past , but they have just finished a major culvert work to take the stream under the canal to the river. It really must be awful to be flooded and knowing it can happen again and again and again.

 

I saw some close up photos of the concrete piles a few days ago, and whilst they have done an amazing job, I'd like to see the contractors who put the concrete blocks in the footings strung up.

 

Actually a look at old maps there was a burn there until recently, you can see the remnants on the OS map further down that leads to the Tyne.
