COTTAGES, CASTLES AND NARROW BOATS

As it was my day off and the sun was shining I decide to have a little wander around the local area after a few jobs in the garden.

One of the pretty cottages around my area.


The entrance to Bickerton Castle.......which is not really a castle but something a rich family decided to build as a shadow of Beeston Castle which is close by.


This is near Nantwich and every year they build a straw statue/figure around 50' high on different themes. This one is on the Cycling Olympics, and before that there was a 50' Polar Bear with glowing eyes, and before that a 50' Meerekat.

Loli, when I was a kid (yes, I really was a kid in the dark distant past) I spent part of my school summer holiday on a working narrow boat. The parents of one of my friends at school lived and worked on it (he stayed with an aunt when his parents were travelling) and I joined him for the holiday. It was horse drawn and, as a kid from London, I was fascinated by the horse. There were two boats, with us living in the front one and the cargo in the second. Wonderful holiday

 

I have a friend who lives on a Narrow Boat year in and year out all through the seasons and travels up and down the canals throughout the Midlands . He loves it as he's a single man, although he has a girl friend he calls "Mrs Bracegirdle" and he reckons it's the life.

 

I believe they don't pay Rates as such, liliana, but they have to have a licence to float a boat on the water, they also have to have insurance, and the boats have to be hauled out of the water and checked every so often. So while it's cheaper than living in a house it is getting to be more expensive as the yearly costs go up. Plus, I believe that they're only allowed to moor up in certain areas for a limited time. Anyway, here's the rest of the pics I took of the narrow boats at the Marina.....there was a lot of narrow boats moored up!!
