Thank you :) so you manage to overwinter your plants in an unheated greenhouse? That's very daring ;) how many Epiphyllums and Aporophyllums do you have? I've listed a few of my plants on that website as well your plants look lovely in those photos

    Hi Aesculas,
I Did'ent mean to mislead you when I said I over winter my plants in the greenhouse, that's mainly my dessert cacti and succs, most of my Epi's, Rhipsalis, Aporo's and hoya's are inside, on a light window-sill also a few tender Cacti/succs. I have just got Acanthorhipsalis monacantha, unusual in having orange flowers, and someone is swapping me an Epiphyllum Crenatum cutting. You can leave dessert cacti bone dry in the winter, but as you know epi's and similar types still need a bit of water, just to stop them drying out completely, but not enough to get them growing, keep cool but frost free.

I have lots of images if anyone wants to see them.

Aporophyllum "Dawn" a plant I sadly no longer have, note the bubble wrap insulation in the background. After a couple of years the bubble wrap falls to pieces as it is not UV stabilized like the proper stuff.

    Epiphyllum 'Dreamland'-1.jpg
    Epiphyllum "Dreamland"

Sadly I don't have many Epiphullums at all (these are mostly the plants I lost in Winter), but I am looking to build my collection up again, have you tried Westfield Cacti and Glenhurst nurseries?? They do quite a few epis, etc..

Ah that explains it thanks Cactusface :)

as to the person swapping the E. crenatum cutting that would be me :snork: I got a few Aporocactus cuttings a few months ago so I thought I'd have ago with some hybrids

do you have Facebook at all? as there's a number of groups dedicated to epi's and similar plants :dbgrtmb:

Well you never know who your talking to on the net! I will be posting the cutting on Monday, I also have Epi "King Midas" & "Flamingo" which I could supply unrooted cuttings off, if you fancy any other swaps.... I do have Facebook but don't use it a lot, but those groups sound interesting!! I'll take a look. One of the first books I read was F.R McQuown's book with his London hybrids in it, a few scented ones would be nice?
Westfield Cacti are listing 3 of Mike Haines plants? Hope that helps.
      Regards
      Mel.

Aporophyllum "Wendy" another lost plant, but I'll replace it with something

        Thanks Mel,

I spotted those Mike Haines plants last night and had to restrain myself from throwing money at the screen in time to click the checkout option xD they're such fabulous hybrids and so rarely available especially at the right price!

I only have one mature Epi 'Buttercup' which I bought from a spiky cactus fanatic on the BCSS online forums I have a rooted cutting of that one and a pink seed grown plant from a member on here but I don't know if any of them are scented? Perhaps you might like some of those as well? I've also read the book by F. R. McQuown and it is a great read with some very useful information, I'd love to get some more of his hybrids as well but there appears to be only a few left in cultivation so far I have 'London Sunshine', 'London Desire' & 'London Glory' but those are still just cuttings but I can't wait until they bloom.

I've also just read the Epiphyllum Handbook by Haselton but that's a more scientific read but still just as fascinating

It is not illegal to grow Lophophora williamsii (peyote) in the UK.
As Sal said, you can pick one up in most garden centers.

I have read some research papers that claim that only Lophophoras grown in habitat will have the phsyco effect on you. Apparently cultivated plants won't.
Apparently it has something to do with the soil that they grown in containing the correct combinations of minerals etc.

        Hi All,
I agree with Sirius, Lophophora only works when gown in habitat. You can buy it from most cactus nurseries, etc. I did have one a few years ago, but was never tempted to eat it!! A few variations but, I liked the pale to mid pink flowers (some are white) the plant itself does not have a lot going for it??

          Hi All,
Well today I finished the Greenhouse, that is lining it with bubble wrap, which is just as well as the temp went down to 8c last night, when we saw our first hint of a frost! I'm moving my Epi's etc, indoors, perhaps on the landing window sill where it's not too warm, with just a drop of water now and again, just to stop them drying out too much. Here's a couple of pictures....

              Hi All,
Sorry for the long delay, had a few problems and building myself a new PC has been one of them.... Then the old iMac did a wobbley too. And BT finely pulled the plug on the FREE website I have had and enjoyed for years... So for you:

longk I'm in the process of uploading many images to Photobucket/Flikr can't decide which is best or easier to use. But if you want to see anything particular just ask!!!

sal73 I will start a new thead under something like time & temp, to give advice regarding Cacti in a cold greenhouse...

I find the @ useful for addressing seperate people in one reply!!

PS but did'ent realize it made it in to a link??

Re-potted some more of my plants today and I'm really shocked with the rate of root growth with some! I have a cutting of Epiphyllum crenatum var. Kinchinjunga that I bought rooted in December which I have already had to repot! I also had to repot all my unrooted Disocactus eichlamii which I planted in September I have so many that I've planted two well rooted cuttings per a 5" pot which I'm sure they will fill in no time they've already got 2-3 new canes each growing from below the soil :)

The cuttings I received from yourself are also doing well Cactusface :dbgrtmb:

              Hi Carl,
Good to hear your plants are going well, but are they a little too warm? as their growing so well?? I've had a Rhipsalis dry out at the tips as it was on the dry side, and their in an unheated spare bedroom. 3 Weeks ago I sown my cactus seeds and I have about 50% showing, the succs were the first to show, some after not much more then a week (using my home-made controller, this lowers the temp during the night).

Thanks to BT for killing my free website, as I now have something better and FREE! More space too, so now I'm adding more and bigger images take a look at http://melsaunders.x10.bz. and the new email [email protected]10.bz

              Regards
              Mel.
