Well I do lots of ITALIAN cruises and land holidays, and the main meat is
MILK VEAL ie white veal (crated fed milk and no daylight) it is very sweet and tender
every restaraunt has veal on the menu Also Cavalier or Horse meat, a nice fillet of Horse meat is good very strong in iron also tender

Rose Veal is young beasts that have NOT been crated up and had an outdoor life all be it short, also sweet and tender
The alternate is to destroy them at birth

If you know how Veal is produced & are happy to eat it then that is your decision.. There is plenty of beautiful meat to be had that is produced in a humane way without the need to be cruel just to get a pale meat..
I just find it very unnecessary & cruel.. Each to their own then... ;)

The rose veal that I buy locally has been humanely reared and has spent more time on it's mother's teats that an average beef to be calf. Not cruel or inhumane and I eat it with a clear conscience,

The point is rose veal is a viable alternative to shooting the animal at birth which is what would happen normally, but you can't have it both ways! If you drink milk you are contributing to the deaths of thousands of male calfs every year

Why would a dairy farmer keep male calfs? what possible use could he have for them? At least if they are raised for rose veal they get a number of months on this planet under the sun in pleasant surroundings...

Or would you rather the farmer killed them after they had just been born?

Jenny, the link Marley put up.

I only eat meat a couple of times a week perhaps and that may be bacon or sausage or mince. I do like mince as in shepherd/cottage pies, chili, bolognese. I occasionally have a lamb stew here which I would never eat in the UK.

Obviously one to agree to dissagree on then Jenny.. I don't drink milk because I don't like it, but do eat meat.. Just don't agree with certain farming practices that is all...

Hi all - great to hear such a lively debate on rose veal. We've been rearing British Welfare friendly rose veal on our farm for three years now, and the biggest challenge we have is educating the general public on what it is, how it is different to traditional white veal and addressing many misconceptions have.

Marley - the inhumane farming practices you refer to were actually banned in the UK in 1992. British rose veal calves live in large open pens with deep bedding, natural light and ventilation and in large social groups so they can have interaction with each other. They are fed a balanced, mixed diet including their mothers milk and straw and cereal based feed: this gives the meat a pink colour (hence the name rose veal). In fact, British rose veal is endorsed and supported by both CIWF and the RSPCA freedom food campaign.

Secondly, many people don't like the idea of eating 'baby' calves. However British rose veal calves are killed at 8 months old, when they are actually a good fully 3/4 grown. This is still older than most lamb and chicken which are killed at about 4 months and 3 months respectively.

Thirdly - the cost. Rose veal is expensive; not because of farmers and butchers cashing in, but because of the cost of rearing the animal. At 8 months old, it takes a lot of expensive feed to rear a calf to the size it is as in the first few months of their lives, they grow in size, but don't add as much meat as they do as when they are older. They are also usually from a dairy breed, which are not naturally conducive to meat production anyway, so cost per kilo is also increased.

The main reason we should all eat more rose veal is that male dairy calves are a by-product of the dairy industry. They have no other use and are currently shot at birth or exported live to the continent. At least as rose veal, it not only gives them a good (if still relatively short) life, but it also raises awareness of the issues.

        Hope this helps,
        Heaves Farm Veal

Very informative video. I hadn't heard of rose veal until I read this thread. I don't eat a great deal of meat anymore, but when I do I like a decent piece do I will definitely give rose veal a try

          Roger,
many thanks for explaining the rearing of bull calf Rose veal to us on Gardeners Corner. Your beasts look very healthy and happy and I can empathise with their choice of abode from here on into Winter!
A great video that makes me, for one, feel assured that the meat I buy, cook and eat is some of the finest in the world,
          sincerely,
          Jenny namaste

an excellent explanation about rose veal in the post above, which shows you never know who is reading ...
I have never tried rose veal but certainly this post has raised my interest in the product.
