Are they solid gold compasses, with diamond bearings or something?

Last time I bought a half decent compass for orienteering my way around the moors of the peak district, I think I paid about £12. It even pointed the right way, unless of course the OS maps were also wrong:)

They are more expensive now as Magnetic North has moved, so each compass bought has an additional £20 Levy towards moving one metric tonne of cast iron towards the North Pole
This has to be done soonest or Santa will get lost, and children will not get their Ukelelies

Won't be any use soon, as the Poles are gearing up for another flip. Hence me posting mine to Folly Mon & buying a night sight so I don't get hit by confused migrating Owls.

Thats why there is a subsidy to shift tons of cast iron, to keep it as is :-)

Please do not tell me you gave Folly Mon my Military Compass ? :cry3:
May migrating Owls deposit on your curly head :-)

Putting one in the post to you in the morning Jack, will work for a while. When the poles flip, you'll have to paint the other end of the needle:snork:

Can you still buy Illuminous paint ?

In the 60's every Sunday newspapers advert column along with xray specs had Illuminous paint, it was great, now banned as a health hazard as it is Radioactive

Locally we have a beach Dalgety Bay Fife
Generations have walked it, played on it and swam in the sea, with no obvious problems
Now we have decaying Nuclear Boats up the river in Rosyth, they checked the beach and found two microns of Radioactive material
The beach has been closed now for two years

After the second WW dozens of aircraft were scrapped at the air ministry Dalgety Bay
It turns out they just burried the instruments which off course had illuminous dials

In the 70's the ground was levelled and a new POSH TOWN with expensive view of the Forth houses was built, Now they can not give them away, and people are not allowed to grow crops in their gardens

Back to the Sunday papers and illuminous paint, I must have had about a litre of the stuff from them, and ingested about quarter of a pint through my fingers, or mouth
I assure you I do not glow in the dark, even my submariners badge never picked up any radons
So it is IMHO a total over reaction

IF you still have a compass I will send you moola if you wish to offer it

Still had a tin of Humbrol luminous paint. Used it to put a glowing tip on the "Larry Trotter" magic wands I made for the kids last Xmas.

I've read about the beach you are on about, didn't realise it was near you.

Compass on the way, don't worry about moola, would rather it went to a good home.

              Dalgety Bay
For the past 40 years, several times in the school holidays, we have picnicked on it eaten sand sandwiches, swam in the sea, generally spent all day on it, and none
of us has any problems, or Cancers

Now all of a sudden it is deadly, shut to the public for years

I expect once the price has fallen on the Posh houses, and people have abandoned them
then someone within the very dangerous beach group, will buy them all very cheap
then six months later declare the beach extra safe
