For ages, I've been after a decent sized wok with a lid. I have a good wok that I've had for years, but it has no lid.

Today, in the local charity shop, I found a wok with a lid, so I bought it. I'm pleased with my purchase, £3 for a good sized wok with lid and various bits and pieces, but there are two components that I can't figure out.

One is a wire disk that looks like it sits in the bottom of the wok. That would be great for steam things on, as I could put a drop of water in the wok, put the wire bit in with something on on, then the lid.

Another is a semicircle wire thing that clearly attaches to the top of the pan. I have no idea what that one is for.

A bit of research last night led me to the term Tempura, which Amazon has called the half circle wire thing, but it seems to most people Tempura is a Japanese dish, which from what I gather is simply deep fried, battered anything.

I guess the wire mesh tempura is, as Zigs suggests, meant to keep things warm but also to let the oil drain off.

Here's some lass showing us the basic concepts, except her wire thing doesn't go over her wok.

Thats handy:dbgrtmb: i'm going to make some tempura soon. Willow discovered Linda McCarthage pretend prawns the other day (she won't eat fish)

Tried a packet out, if I didn't know they were veggie I would have thought they were real prawns.

Going to get some nori seaweed, already got the tempura batter.

Here's some almost certainly useless trivia that my Taiwanese mate taught me.

To us, a wok is a specific type of pan, but the word 'wok' just literally translates as 'pan'.
