For people like me who have never suffered any floods in the last 30 years it is difficult to get a realistic idea of how it's effecting other people.............until you see the picture you've posted, Ziggy.:dunno:

There were sleepless nights for many last night. Some of the roads were passable this afternoon, all the houses on the main street in Langport were sandbagged, but it looks like the river didn't burst.

        Got a few pics.

Thats the trouble Jenny, the river is tidal from Langport downwards, and we're coming into spring tides next week, 2 metres higher than this week.

This is what it normally looks like.

            Normal level.

            Today.

Didn't take a pic, but there are new houses right next to the bridge built on the floodplain.

That's why I was wondering above about 'what if' this had happened last week, when there was one of the highest spring tides of the year. Perhaps not another 1607, but there were 12.1 metre tides (Watchet) last week, which are only 8.6m today, or only 10.4 metres next week,

              Cheers Sheal:dbgrtmb:

Scrunge, combine that with gale force winds blowing up the Bristol Channel so the water backs up, then Langport is in trouble.

Cornish RNLI are on standby in Bridgewater as they recon the high tide later in the week will push the floods back into the town.

This just about sums it up for today.

We've just got back in from a run out to Whitby. We are fortunate enough not to have flooding like down in Somerset. However I was surprised to see that lots of land now has puddles the size of small lakes on, and even the main roads had little rivers flowing across in places, and lots of mud that's been washed off the fields. There were a few diversions in place, and one main road closed completely because it was not passable.

The thing is, we haven't had that much rain here in the last few days, at least not enough to cause anything more than a small puddle. It can only mean that the ground was already saturated to the point where even light rainfall had nowhere to go.

I hope for the sake of those in the south west that we get a decent dry spell soon.
