Zamia pumila (Coontie)

Was speaking to Sis last night and she is back in Germany from Florida early February and asked me if I wanted any seeds of this ...

I have never heard of it and from reading about it it appears to be 'slow growing' which is of no interest to me whatsoever.

Any of you know it?

 

I've heard of Zamia, back in my cycad growing days
Its not one that I tried, and my cycad collection is now no more, due to weather and shortage of growing space.

 

So, Pete, as I know Cycad is 'very' slow growing, best I pass on this one as I need fast growing things at the river?

 

I doubt its fast, as I remember Cycads do nothing fast.

 

Guess you don't want any of these seeds from Sis either as she plans on bringing zillions of them back to Germany the first week in February but I'm not sure what her thinking is ...


You do know this is a rhetorical question ... ?

 

They sell this as houseplants here (Zamia pumila), no chance outside, but would do infinitely better in Portugal than in a room here for sure.

 

Hello Stephen. Taking a closer look, it resembles the Zamioculcas or ZZ plant but reading up on them they appear to be quite different ... I had a ZZ plant years ago but managed to kill it off! I have had another now for about six months and it is still very healthy, in my unheated outdoor living room.

 

Don't they sell things like that in IKEA? They often have quite unusual stuff, but you have to buy it as soon as you see it.

 

I'd be very happy to try any seeds Victoria, rescued a C revoluta from a pile of dumped garden rubbish yesterday, it was a reasonable size but the fronds were all brown, roots look good and the stem is hard, so might give it a chance.

 

I think I may have mistaken this for Zamioculcas

Looks like it should to me.
Zamioculcus, is a totally different plant.

 

So, Pete. please explain the difference ...

 

Zamia is a member of the Cycad family

Zamioculcus is a tuberous Aroid
