I'm sure the Chinese are rubbing their hands together at the thought of all those new LEDs to manufacture.;)

Maybe - but if common sense was applied, we have the capability to make them here. We have numerous electronics manufacturers that are currently making bits for smartphones etc, but I am sure if our government was to offer a contract for X-million LED's, one or more of them would bite?

Redcar sea front is currently undergoing massive redevelopment. Among other things, it has new lamp posts that shine straight down with white light. I'm impressed. I don't know if they are LED ones. Maybe they are. I might see if I can find out.

But they would still be more expensive than China.
Off topic but that is where the whole thing has gone wrong.

We cant produce anything cheaper than certain other parts of the world, especially those that use forced labour and kids.
For the work that we cannot source overseas, we import the labour.
We Dont stand a chance and I cant see things ever getting better.

As corporal Frazer used to say "we're doomed".

Here's another good use for £30Billion funding. A small chemical company in Stockton-on-Tees recently made the news after they were able to prove that they'd made petrol out of nothing more than air. As we all know, our air contains, among other things, carbon and hydrogen. Just what you need to make hydrocarbons, and with a bit of witchery beyond my understanding, petrol.

They've proven it, but their prototype kit literally extracted a couple of drops of petrol over a couple of weeks. They are a small firm, so can't ramp up by recruiting more boffins and buying more kit. Imagine if they had £30bn (or even a few million) in funding to perfect this technology. Imagine Britain being the country that changes the world for ever. Instead of transport polluting the air, the process of making the fuel actually cleans the air. And better still, next time the middle east hold us to ransom with their rising oil costs, we just tell them to keep it, we'll make our own.

Once you added government tax it would still be unaffordable.

Trouble is, we don't even own our utilities any more - Sutton Water has just been sold to a Japanese company, and Veolia that supplies my water is a French company!

If world war breaks out, we are totally cream-crackered.

Pass, but it would be great if it did. I am an absolute convert.

One of the streets that has been done is the one I used to live in, and when we were there the lighting was ineffective on the road, but managed to illuminate our bedroom remarkably well! The new LED's are the exact opposite, and must be saving a small fortune in electricity bills.

I know when I lived in Sheffield, I lived on one the hills overlooking the whole city. It used to frustrate me that I could see a sea of orange at night, because I knew that me being able to see it all despite being higher than most of the lamps meant that most of their energy was shooting off in completely the wrong direction from where it was needed. In effect, all that energy was just being beamed straight out into space.

I must try and get a picture of these lights at some point - its not one of those roads that you can stop on though, so might not be the easiest to do.

EDIT - the slightly sad bit of it is, the street I am in now has just had new street lights last year, and although they are remotely controlled and dimmable, they are still conventional bulbs - reckon someone has missed a trick to be honest. At least they are white and not orange.
