Trouble is, how many people dispose of them into their garden waste bin (as the council's have pressed people into using) not realising that their waste will end up coming back to them in a compost bag.

I know the area I live in, bonfires are a no-no as its a smoke free area, and the council promotes the use of their brown wheelie bins for garden waste.

Anyone not really into gardening might well throw blighted plants in their bins thinking they were doing a good thing

Must admit I throw all plant material in my garden bin, diseased or not.
If my other bin was full of dead diseased plant material they would probably not take it, on the grounds that it was in the wrong bin.
I do use a bonfire a couple of times a year, but even then I get nasty looks from neighbours, even in mid winter.
We are allowed bonfires on the allotment site from Oct to March.

But I still think the slightest piece of blighted material left on the ground will carry the disease over to the next year.
Who actually manages to burn/destroy every leaf?

I also think its very much about conditions being right for the fungus to grow.

Lets hope we get a bone dry hot summer so as to break the circle.:)

Me, Sir! I do, Sir!!! :yay: :loll:

We grow our tomatoes (don't grow potatoes) through plastic. All plants and leaves from the toms get burnt whether diseased or not (just in case). It's easy to clear all the leaves as it's on plastic.

We're fortunate and can have bonfires (had two very big ones in March) so we burn anything that may be a problem. :blue thumb:

According to Badger Weather there's lots of warm colours at the weekend http://www.weatherbadger.com/viewer.php?area=uk&wxcht=exp_temp but rain in the South West on Saturday http://www.weatherbadger.com/viewer.php?area=uk&wxcht=exp_precip

It went down to 1.5degC on my sheltered south facing patio last night, and temps on my edge of village plot are normally a couple of degrees lower. The blackbirds nesting in my rear garden hedge have abandoned their nest and I'm not surprised as temps have been going below freezing for weeks, there's still not a single leaf on the hedge and no insects around.
