I saw a bus with hairy wheel arches today. Is that to brush the lampposts and post boxes as they drive past? :)

No, they are spray guards :)

The water that a coach or bus can displace is quite a lot, particularly when compared to the smaller wheels of a car, and that tends to get thrown out sideways as spray which then either soaks pedestrians or knackers visibility for other motorists/cyclists etc.

The brushes simply catch the spray droplets (think of the way that brushes catch a cold draught under a door, and the principle is fairly similar), and then it drips off vertically in larger globules.:)

          No worries :)

Its funny, because they were commonplace years ago, and sort of faded into obscurity, but have slowly crept back into use.

The other thing you might notice is on lorries - the side of the mudflaps that is facing the tyre often has a material that is similar to artificial grass; the principle is exactly the same as the brushes. :)

Admittedly when I usually see hairy wheel arches, it means that one of our engineers is working on the brakes

I've seen a few hairy wheel arches in my time. Its good to see they're coming back into fashion.

Zigs, first the gritter, now the hairy bus, are you sure the heat isn't getting to you?

Zigs If you are wondering what the fluorescent pointers are, which are on the wheel nuts of lorrys and buses, they are to tell you your nuts are coming loose

Reminds me of the time I woke up and found a bolt in my bellybutton, I unscrewed it and my bum fell off.
