Not sure if this is a gardening question or not, so thought I would put it here. I have been seed collecting and sorting today, starting with African marigolds; since around half way through doing the marigolds (mid-morning) I have had a numb feeling on the tip of my middle finger on my right hand. Is there a chemical in marigolds that would cause this?

Alternatively, has anyone ever had something similar and might be able to suggest what it is?

sounds like a mild form of carpal tunnel , over use , but if symptoms persist into next week see your Doctor is my advice.

When the local kids school decided to build a bottle greenhouse, I was tasked to cut the bottles
Two thousand, and given a pair of kiddies scissors, after four hours my thumb and forefinger became numb, it took two weeks to get the feeling back in them
So it sounds like a trapped nerve, or as Spruce advised same thing, but due to carpal tunnel

Maybe a circulation problem, or was it cold and damp out? My fingers quite lterally go in slow motion when cold. It can be quite frustrating. One time when buying a bottle of pop from a kiosk in winter, the very patient lady couldn't hide the expression on her face as she watched the fingers of my right hand very, very slowly close in on the coins in my left hand. I was paying in exact change. After picking out a couple of coins I gave up, held out my left hand with all the coins in it, and asked her to pick out what she needed:)

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is also a possibility. I think from previous threads you've done more than your fair share of being a mechanic, so plenty of opportunity to knock and smash bits off your fingers over the years.

Nothing to do with the analgesic effects of Marigolds then? As in Calendula Cream?

African marigolds aren't calendula I thought. Are they not tagetes, an entirely different species?

Tagetes are French Marigolds Clueless. :)

Hope your finger sorts itself out FC, I'm sure it's only a temporary thing. :)

Not calendula then. I am intrigued by this idea that its an analgesic though. I must look into that. I like things like that:)

Marigolds can be used for curing warts too, though I've not had a wart to try it on.

I've read that when boiled in water, the cooled water can be used as a rinse for blonde hair to help keep it blonde, though as opposed to what, I'm not sure.

I know Marigolds are quite a useful plant, but I've not heard that one before Clueless. Perhaps it has a bleaching agent in it. Surely blonde hair stays blonde naturally doesn't it? The blondes in my family have.

numb feeling in fingers or toes is never particularly good news and care has to be taken to keep the limb hydrated and clean should some injuries following the loss of sensation occur.

I suspect its a fairy tale. It said it in a herb book I no longer have (lent it out, never seen it since). Mind you, the same herb book said I could make a girl pregnant just by giving her a bunch of hawthorn flowers. Wife and I tried it on my sister in law because we wanted her to have another kid. All it did to her was make her sneeze.

                      Thanks all :)

Some of the feeling has come back overnight, so now it only has that feeling you get on the skin either side of a deep cut if you know what I mean? My elbow is also killing me this morning, so I think that the trapped nerve theory is bang on. Either that, or its the latest wee quirk in whatever it is that the doctors cannot yet work out.
