they are beautiful looking birds Scrungee, its amazing how many different breeds/types there are out there. we went to 'The Aviaries' yesterday (its like a farm/pet shop type place that specialises in birds (from small finches to macaws/cockatoo's ect...even owls!) anyhoo there are often chickens roaming about the place & one cockerel was absolutely enormous! :hate-shocked: we were also admiring a lovely little Silkie hen who was just sitting there, very comfy & chilled out looking...when to our amazement out popped three itty bitty teeny weeny little chicks from under her :wub2: well i say three but their could well have been more hidden under her bum fluff...we were spellbound watching them:wub2: i've been hankering after Silkies for ages...but now i really really have to get myself one or two...or three ;)

I remember as a child both my grandparents keeping chickens - used to be a Rag & Bone man come round on a horse and cart - give him old clothes - he gave you a chick (or two). I cried when my nan wouldn't let me get one :)

Many years ago they'd be hatched at the Village School as part of science lessons. When the experiment was over the teacher would ask the children "Hands up who wants a chick". Well that's what the kids told their parents when they came home with chicks in cardboard boxes without having asked them first if it was O.K.

Our existing 3 hens don't think so, 2 are standing on a bale denouncing them (or us, or both?) and the other one just went into the coop to roost, probably hoping they wont be there when she wakes up in the morning.

Sounds very tame, Scrungee. I introduced 3 new hens the other week and cor did they kick up a rumpus! :chicken:

Lovely looking girls: hope they settle in well over the next few days :dbgrtmb: and it's looks like eggs will be on the menu very soon judging by their combs and wattles.

The 3 existing hens are Mona (Copperblack) who went to bed, wont last much longer and isn't up for a scrap, and Ginger (Warren) & Wanda (Columbian Blacktail) who are both smaller than Gwen, Layla and Nesta- we deliberately picked some larger hens who looked like they'd be a match for the incumbents.

Wanda just went for one of the newbies who ducked and Wanda ended up grabbing Ginger (her best friend who was behind the noob) by the neck and the 2 of them were rolling around the ground fighting one another for a while before they realised what they were doing. Chickens are stupid (but fun).

You can't have just one as they need company, so best to get a minimum of three so you've always got a spare.

I just regret not having more space because there were just so many hens that we wanted to bring home with us.

My first journey into hen keeping was a liberated battery hen (yes, just the one!) She was very "oven ready" when I first got her. Cared for her though the summer, autumn and winter and by Spring she was up to full strength ... then ... she died! (Vet guessed heart failure when I mentioned it when I was there having my cat seen to). The garden I had back then was a fraction of the size garden I have now.
