It is sad that here in USA the skin color still plays a big part. Take for instance the trial that went on forever. The with man shot a black teenager in self-defence. His life (white guy) was all over for months and months, he spent all his money defending himself. NOW, if you look at statistics you will find, lots of Black men shoting a black teenager---to you see them all over the front page (NO) do you see them using up all their money to defend themselves (NO).

Ok, to Clueless, you got it pretty right, but left out one detail OBAMA is the dictator. Obama if he had any talent in changing things he would be able to talk with both sides to get to a smoother decision long before this. This looks like two groups now who will not come out and play nice. And it has to do with the parent.

This is the part I'm still struggling to comprehend. I'm, not going to try too hard because I don't need to know, I'm just casually interested:)

Obama has shown incredibly negotiating skill in his career as US President. The US and Iran were literally ready to kill each other just before Obama came to power. The US politicians in general, it seems to me, think that all middle eastern countries are backward pushovers, so the majority were happy to pick a fight with Iran. Obama appeared to realise that no only could the US not win that one at that time, but NOT fighting was a viable alternative. He demonstrated his negotiating skills when he managed to talk that one down without the US appearing to have backed down.

In assisting the Libyan uprising, there was immense pressure on Obama to just go in all guns blazing. After all, this was a rare chance to bag Gaddafi, but again he talked, negotiated terms that would be supported by Libya's neighbour's and then authorised a very limited, controlled intervention.

These two things alone, demonstrate to me that Obama, or at the very least his minions acting under his command, has impeccable talking skills, and that he listens too. If he did not listen, quite possibly the US would now be locked in a stalemate war with Iran. Maybe the world would be at war by now because having picked a fight in Iran, Afghanistan, and Iraq, other middle eastern nations that have been itching to have a pop for years might well have exploited the situation.

If he really was a dictator, could he not have simply ignored the republican opposition and did as he pleased anyway?

Remember, the new media here, plays up what they wish to and plays down other things. Not everything is true from the news media.

Dream on! I'm considered a freak on our trading estate as I have friends from Asia and the Asian sub-continent. Some of the things that I hear are really offensive, sometimes from genuinely intelligent people.

But its true that when Obama came to power, the US was heading very swiftly towards another war it couldn't win (Iran), and when Obama came in, he somehow managed to diffuse the situation. Its also true that under Obama's command, the US didn't start WW3 in the middle east when they intervened to Libya. We all know the media paints its own picture, but just looking out my front window and seeing that we don't appear to be in WW3 convinces me that at least some of it is true.

As far as the Middle East goes, I see one big problem, Israel.
The Yanks will defend them to the hilt, and if push come to shove I guess we would also.

I tend to think a lot of the meddling in the Middle East is to appease Israel, and stop them starting an all out war in the region.

I didn't know the US was involved in Libya, I thought it was mostly the French and our two aircraft.

I think most Europeans who've seen Fox News know that already, Redstar!!! I love the strapline of Fox News... "Fair and Balanced"............they even manage to do that without even a smile. If ever I'm in need of a bit of comedy I just watch Fox News as they are so indoctrinated in Republicanism they actually think people believe what they say.......always makes me chuckle!!:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

Totally agree Clueless! From here it seems that he's being held to ransom by a bunch of Redneck infants who have thrown their toys out of the pram 'cos all those "nasty people" didn't vote for them.
All the fuss about Obamacare is a little baffling - it strikes me that it is just an American version of our National Insurance without the NHS and state pension (over simplified maybe, but appears to be the crux of it).

                Same all over the world.

Well, there's a lot of interested parties [Medical and the Insurance] who stand to lose a LOT of Dollars if ObamaCare does get passed. At the moment they have a stranglehold on the charges for what passes for Healthcare in the US. It should be renamed Wealthcare........cos if you ain't got it you don't get it.
It also begs the obvious question as to why the Republicans are dead set against ObamaCare............and it's not because they care for the population of the US but because they care for the Dollar a darned sight more, but the rest of the World knows that while our friends over the Pond just don't seem to get it.
Maybe it's a symptom of the US still being a young political organisation [it's only 225 years since the Constitution was written] and of the huge area it's differing States cover that it's such a extremely divided country regarding Political opinions and the way the Business Organisations have more power than the Politicians who don't become financially involved with them or acquiesce to their demands.

Does anyone think that if the NHS had not started way back in the late 40s, over here, it would be easy to get a similar system going now days.

I doubt it would get off the ground, the cost would be colossal, and I'm sure there would be very similar protests against it.

Nobody likes change, and if its going to cost them money they like it even less.
They presumably see them selves paying for other peoples health care, when up to now they have paid their own.

Actually, that's not quite accurate, Pete. The Medical Infrastructure is there. It's modern, reasonably well run but not available to the full if you're not a paying Serf to the Medical Insurance Organisations who are so powerful and influential in Congress. The only "colossal cost" would be a change in the way of Political thinking [I think I just saw a Republican Porkie just flying past my window.] and medical treatment was funded, being diverted in part from the coffers of the Medical Insurance Companies and other interested parties [Political and non Political] with their fingers in the Golden Goose Pie. The information regarding the population medically is there so it would merely have a change of ownership.......at a price no doubt. So if the Political Will was there it would be a big task but not impossible. But the Republicans and their friends will fight it to the last dying patient I'm afraid.
The NHS started on 5 July 1948 on a different basis. The Hospital structure then in the UK was nothing like the base that the Americans can start from. We were still in a state of recovering from almost Bankruptcy after WWII, rationing was operating, what Hospital structure was most thinly spread, Cottage Hospitals were then reasonably abundant, clinics run by Charity, and we were still really reminiscent of the early 1900's. So really the NHS was started from scratch as an organisation where Doctors, Dentists, Opticians and the Hospitals were brought together for the very first time.
What would cost the US Government is the price of the legal battles that it would cost due to the blocking, screaming of Political Opposition, use of the funds of the parties with Agenda.....hey, wait a minute isn't that happening now??

I've been reading this thread with interest, particularly as my son now lives in America and is married to an American.

A question I have to ask is.....if President Obama was white would he be getting as much hassle as he is now?

I've just heard a budget agreement is very close to being reached.
