    Hi all,

I have some questions regarding planting garlic cloves in the Autumn.

I have bought 3 bulbs of Thermidrome french garlic.

If i plant it now, am i expecting any shoots to appear this year? If so, do i need to protect these over winter by covering them with straw?

Also, does anyone spread blood fish and bone on compost surface?

    many thanks in advance!

They will put shoots up, but they are pretty hardy.

No need to cover with straw, as Zigs says they are hardy.

I wouldn't do that, from the plant's point of view it's better to mix it into the soil prior to planting so it's available at their roots. Also it's best to bury it as the smell is very attractive to unwanted vermin.

I'd say covering in straw would actually encourage things to have a nibble over winter. Mine went in a week or so ago and I'm expecting a few inches of green shoots over winter and a good growing season after. I might not get it but that's what I'm expecting!

I planted mine yesterday (Three new bulbs of Solent Wight + the best of this years that I havent eaten yet) - dug in a good handful of slow release + an inch or so of new compost as a top dressing should see them thru until harvest time next year.

best not to "protect" Autumn planting garlic varieties as it is the cold, over winter, that causes the cloves to "split" which is the basis of the cloves formed for next year's harvest. otherwise you wind up with a single large bulb :(

Brilliant, thank you all so much!

I'll mix in some blood fish and bone into the soil instead of on top, I'll plant the cloves and leave uncovered throughout the winter and then enjoy massive bulbs next year!

Once again, your help is really appreciated

Quick question, I have just prepared 3 plant pots. Filled them with compost and a little blood fish and bone. Am I ok to plant the cloves in the morning or do I have to let the pots sit a bit? I'm sure I've read somewhere before about leaving them to rest before planting in the garlic?
