As some of you are aware, I have been off work this week with an eye infection of some sort or other - anyway, they have been getting gradually better until this morning when for some unknown reason they went absolutely mental.

I tolerated it for a while, and even contemplated getting Mrs C to get me some more medcine while she was at work, but in the end I decided it best to get on the bus and get my behind to my GP surgery which has a walk-in centre attached.

The nurse was fantastic, and explained that the problem with my eyes was not an infection in her opinion, but an allergic reaction of some kind, and proceeded to check me over generally.

Despite being wheezy last night (I am now wondering if I am allergic in some way to our new duvet cover!), my chest was clear. However, from there on in it was downhill at a fairly swift rate - in checking my pulse, she noted that it was very fast, and in checking my blood pressure she found that too was sky high, to the point where she said that she was not happy at all and went off to get a doctor. Reading between the lines, this has been a good catch as I was apparently heading for a heart attack or a stroke.

Long story short, doc says I have hypertension, and has prescribed Ramipril to get me back on track; I have to go back tomorrow for an ECG, next week for blood tests (and I hate needles!), and again next Friday to have my BP checked again. In addition, I have Fuscithalmic gel for my eyes, and am back on the inhalers again to 'ease my wheeze'

So glad that I chucked the cigarettes all those years ago, or I might not even be here now - feel a diet coming on though.....

Blimey FC that was a close call, I'm glad you have such a good walk in centre close by, sounds like you are in good hands there. Take it easy for a while :)

Good catch indeed and well done to you for recognising you needed the doc.

Feet up my man, ease that wheeze.

No playing with buses for a while FC.

What you said about the duvet cover made me wonder if there's elasticated cotton in it?

              Thanks all :)

Its more fluke than anything to be honest - if my eyes weren't as bad as they were this morning, I would never have gone near the docs; and the eye thing is completely unrelated to the BP problems apparently.

I am really lucky with this surgery - all the staff are lovely, and they seem to be really on the ball. ECG at 10 tomorrow morning, so I think I'll be visiting the big Tesco opposite the docs before I go in - a few choccies are in order for those lovely doctors and nurses.

@Zigs - I'll look at that, as they are pure cotton flannelette; although, this is the second of two new sets that we got, and the first one was fine.

The doc will probably advise you to go on a diet FC.......to reduce your salt intake for one. Hope you feel much better soon. :grphg:

BP monitors are really cheap to buy (if you look around) enabling you to check your blood pressure at home (where it's not elevated by the stress of going to the surgery) enabling both am and pm readings to be taken (they vary) to be taken over several days and get a better picture than from one single check.

It will also allow you to monitor the effectiveness of any prescribed medication, possibly saving on abortive trips to the surgery and also giving peace of mind in knowing what's happening. Many surgeries have monitors that you can book and borrow for several days, but my monitor only cost about £10 from Lloyds Pharmacy over 10 years ago.

Salt - my nemesis! Jack McHammocklashing will bear me out on this - salt is pretty integral to the Scottish diet (less salt on yer chips is considered to be a diet!) and I would admit that I do have a hell of a palate for salt, so that will have to be curbed.

Bit of a bind, as I treated myself to some pork scratchings when I was in Tesco the other day, and I haven't had any yet. Please don't tell me that chocolate is bad in moderation?

@Scrungee - you read my mind. Mrs C works for Boots, so guess what I am asking her to price up?

                          Thanks :)

I normally use sea salt where possible, however that is obviously only when I am controlling the making of the food - obviously any pre-made food stuffs will be made with the cheapest stuff possible. I am not going to make any drastic changes just yet, however changing the type of salt and taking a bit less of it can surely do no harm.

Its a bit of a shock really, as my BP has always been rock-solid and normal on any occasion it has been checked up to now.
