Looking at the stats 8 out of the 12 deaths involve HGV's
This is the 3rd cyclist to die at this roundabout in 2 years!
Surely no coincidence, there were another 2 accidents today in London which left them fighting for there lives which also involved HGVs

Do some cyclist not understand that these vehicles have large blind spots where they cannot be seen

Only a matter of time before it was turned round on the bus operators - BBC link

This is what hacks me off with TfL - rather than take an objective look at a problem and then sort it, they simply point the finger elsewhere.

Not just TfL. It seems to me it is the norm for government to blame everyone but themselves.

Well that would be easy enough. If those responsible for the roads/cycleways etc would actually get up off their backsides and go outside and look, instead of basing their 'knowledge' on a few maps and the odd sentence or two out of the executive summary of some report that was written by committee, then they'd know exactly where the problems were.

When I first moved to Sheffield, I bought a map of the city. Loads of cycle routes were on it. Whoever planned that could pat themselves on their backs and say what a great job they'd done, and they could continue to believe that just as long as they never actually went there to see the actual rails of the tram track running right down the centre of one cycle lane, for about 100 yards, up a steep incline, or an entire stretch of city centre bike lane filled with parked cars, or on Loxley road, a cycle lane that has a sunken storm drain right in the middle of it without warning, or a cycle lane that directs cyclists right through the middle of a junction between two sets of 3 triple lane dual carriageway, or any number of other completely insane almost comical arrangements that probably look fine on a map.

Sadly, there has been yet another tragedy last night, at the junction of Whitechapel Road and Commercial Road - Street View and BBC News article

Again, only those investigating the accident will be able to determine exactly what happened and determine who is at fault, and no doubt the CCTV from the bus will be crucial in that process; however, take a look at the road layout on the lead up to that junction - and in particular the width of that central refuge.

The pavement on the left is variable in width, but in places it is much wider than is needed which suggests to me that by narrowing it, moving street furniture such as light poles etc away from the pavement edge and then getting shot of the bulk of that central island would allow for more on street parking (helps local small businesses), and more carriageway space (easily two nice wide lanes in either direction) - and get rid of the bloody blue stripe! Again, there is that false sense of security given by paint, be that on behalf of the cyclist or the bus driver - people stop paying attention to their own and others safety if you tell them that they are in a safe environment.

I am really getting a bee in my bonnet about this now, as people are dying purely because of overly-designed infrastructure.

The other thing that needs to become mandatory - ALL cyclists, bar none, should wear helmets and high visibility clothing with reflective stripes at ALL TIMES! I have to wear a seatbelt by law when in my car no matter how short the journey, and rightly so.

The truth of the matter is, in the event of an accident my car will turn into a bouncy castle - there are airbags front, back and sides as well as anti-submarining seats and seatbelt pre-tensioners. Even at 60mph, I stand a pretty good chance in an accident. A cyclist has a layer of lycra - hardly protection.

            Totally agree @fat controller
They should be made to have two sets of rear and front lights.
The reflective clothing should be worn over rucksacks not underneath.
The police should also enforce a immediate fixed penalty for those who don't!
