Silly situation yesterday.

I went to M&S to buy some pants (too much information ).
A pack of two was £8 and a pack of three was £10. I wanted two packs of three and there were only two of them on the rack. Unfortunately, one of the packs only had two pairs in it.

So, I went to the counter and said I'll solve the problem of them having an incomplete pack by paying two thirds of the price. Seems fair, doesn't it?

Supervisor was called and played around with the computerised till and said that it shows she can give 25% discount. I point out that it isn't logical to charge proportionately more for something that they would not be able to sell under normal circumstances . Blank look!

She said that they can't offer me more than that because they will probably be able to find the missing pair on the stockroom floor and sell the pack at full price. I ask her whether they had a company policy that if they found unpackaged items on the stockroom floor they just stuck them back together and sold them without customers being told about it. Answer "I don't know."

I then pointed out that they were happy to sell the two pairs for 25% discount and, later, possibly find the odd pair on the floor. Therefore the argument that they couldn't sell them cheaper (on a pro rata basis) because they might be able to sell them at full price if they found the lost pair, would still hold good at the 25% discount. Even blanker looks and a lot of giggling in the large queue that was forming.

Needless to say, I only bought the complete set.
