Absolutely, FC.!!!:snork: But there are people out there who believe that Governments introduce taxes to finance the stated cause/project/aim and not to divert them into the coffers for other purposes or just to add to the financial tax regime. Also some the UK Green taxes have gone to pay Energy Companies not to produce electricity for the National Grid due to the complicated contracts that have been concocted.

Trees take time to grow. Mass farming of trees has it opponents and critics, for good reasons, as well as it's supporters. Wood burning would only scratch the surface of the energy problem and the supply would never satisfy the demand if you were aiming to introduce on a national scale. The technology to capture the carbon is expensive and not yet complete which is why the Coal Burning Power Stations haven't managed to reach the international required standards despite using filters etc.

I hate to disagree, but I think there should should be a mandatory minimum charge for plastic carrier bags.

Its not like our energy bills where we are at the mercy of others, or where the alternatives are to be cold or invest in expensive kit etc. Lots of people I know have a bag mountain somewhere in one of their kitchen cupboards. Its where bags get stored with the best intention of using them again, but they just stay there because people forget to take them out or don't take enough out so the mountain grows. We have a bag mountain in one of our cupboards.

People mean well, but its just bad planning or forgetfulness. If it started hitting us in the pocket if we forgot to reuse the bags, we'd be more likely to remember.

I wouldn't be worried about people losing their jobs in manufacturing them. It sounds harsh, but I don't think there should be jobs for the sake of jobs. There should be jobs because we need something. Its like when we talk about food miles and excess packaging. If we tackled both those things then lots of haulage drivers would be out of a job. Its unfortunate, but the world has to keep moving on.

The plastic bag issue is just rubbish, anyone remember brown paper ones, with string handles.

I agree that wood alone would not cut the mustard in terms of energy, but rather it should be a component of the solution - energy from faecal matter, methane from decomposing rubbish, nuclear, wind, hydro, solar, geothermal - all should be made more of

And I agree that there shouldn't be jobs for the sake if jobs, but would it not be better to pay two or three pence for a fully compostable bag when you need one, safe in the knowledge that it isn't harming the environment and is maintaining a degree of employment? These bags for life aren't really all that much better than bog standard bags - sure, they last a year or so but once disposed of they don't degrade and are no better than ordinary bags

I agree in the sense that it's distracting from the main issue and, of course, the more distracting issues there are from the main issue of energy prices the better the Politicians like it.:coffee:

I just cant see why we dont go back to paper bags, full stop.
And I agree it has nothing to do with energy prices, other than just another stupid "green" problem that can be solved overnight

It doesn't just have to be paper bags. Back in the old days :old: we not only had paper bags but bags made from materials that could easily be recycled and lasted for years.

I tend to use the boxes that the supermarkets put aside for recycling. They're easy to use, the bottom doesn't fall out of them, and they keep things nice and tidy in the car. They last ages and when they are getting a bit past it (tell me about it! :heehee:) I put them out for recycling. So, old fashioned shopping bags for local shops and boxes for bulk shopping :blue thumb:
