Have the council employed expensive environmental consultants to carry out water vole surveys prior to digging?

It is dreadful.. The environment agency have not been maintaining the levels for too long.. We have farming friends there & they are really struggling with their livestock.. They do all their ditches & dykes as do other farmers but the environment agency has been doing next to nothing for too many years now.. Very poor maintenance of the ditches rivers dykes for so long now it is all catching up with them... The pumps are not run early enough either It is pathetic, government cut backs.... Now they have got to spend money they haven't got any more...!!! Although they are saying there is no money for somerset....!!!!!! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-somerset-25908915

My back of cigarette packet calculation suggests replacing the River Parett with a 50 foot diameter pipe would solve the problem, but those 2nd highest in the world Bristol Channel tides would cause another problem. Might have to widen it?

That's half the problem, on spring tides the Parrett is tidal right up to Langport

            :snork: NO
And they dug a ditch which now flows the wrong way, there's no where for the water to go but over the road and to the ditch on the other side :hapydancsmil::th scifD36::dunno::ideaIPB:

And you have consult with the Environment agency first :dbgrtmb:

I saw this on the news this morning.
First of all let me say I know nothing about the geography of the area, other than, it floods easily.
But they had massive pump putting water into the river, so to my thinking the river is doing its job, it must be lower than the water level on the flooded plain.

Floods usually happen when rivers burst their banks, dont they?

Strikes me they just need to sort out the drainage into the river, and that should be down to the land owners in my opinion.:)
I'm guessing its not quite that simple.

The somerset levels are at sea level so the water is hard to flow away, abit like a pint glass, when it's half full there a bit of room for more, but once it's full it over flows

Yeah, but the river was lower than the flood water, otherwise why would they be spending vast amounts of money pumping the water into the river
              It dont make sense:scratch:

Made I laugh when the announced the "Plan for Somerset" today. They said about trees to keep the water in the hills for longer.

Most of the hills above Sedgemoor are covered in trees already and yet the ground under them on the top of the hills is already saturated, so they're talking balderdash already

It's so they can be seen to be doing something, even if it is just pumping one flood into another.

Oh come on, I dont believe that.

As Juffy says the ground is very near sea level, sooooo, expect it to flood if it rains a lot.
I feel very sorry for the people who have been flooded out, but if you live in a place like that common sense tells you, you are at risk.
I live on top of a hill BTW.
