Aldi Strawberry plants

Hi guys, I bought these from aldi this morning. The "instructions" don't give any info about when to plant, any advice welcome please?

Also how? Pots indoors to begin with then transplant? (Sorry the pic is upside down)

I think a trip to Aldi to get me some tomorrow. I think they will need a little protection from frost, a cold greenhouse/ window ledge should be ok I think. I am sure someone will be able to goce you better advice about them though. How much were they?

I doubt if you'll get anything off then this year. Much better prices last year when they sold 6 packs for £2.99 then reduced them to £1.99.

Being larger plants, they produced loads of strawberries followed by hundreds of runners, that I'll sell and more than offset my original purchase costs.

 

£1.99 for that pack. Just need to figure out how and when to plant them

Strawberries are fully hardy in our climate, BUT, because you don't know their history (they may have been raised under glass), I think I'd go through the usual hardening off process for a couple of weeks before planting them out.

 

I've planted some I got last week in pots and left them outside. They're growing new leaves already. You need to watch for hard frost in such young plants, and as you're in Scotland that might apply to you. I'd pop them in a greenhouse, conservatory or kitchen if I were you for a few weeks till the hard frosts are over then put them out.

 

Ibought an Aldi "pop up greenhouse" as well (metal frame, with a (PVC?) cover). Would they be ok inside this?

 

And should I plant them in the pots they will "live" in, or can I do them in small pots and transplant?

 

I have a blowaway too. I find that in the day time, it is notably warmer inside than out, but once the sun has gone to bed, there is little difference.

 

Should be, I've got around 300 strawberry runners rooted into 70mm pots in a small polytunnel. I'm careful about watering, constantly removing dead leaves
and ventilate to avoid botrytis.

 

My dad bought maybe a dozen or so young strawberry plants over the course of a couple years. Now about half of his allotment is full of them, I have ten on them in pots ready to go in, and various fellow allotment holders also have a load of them. I also have a few that I bought myself. Half a dozen can easily turn into 30 or more in a single year it seems.

 

Potting up strawberry runners can get compulsive. From the 60 plants I bought from Aldi last year I have both the original plants + over 300 potted up runners, some of which will be potted up further and left inside polytunnels for an early crop - I've got so many I don't heed advice about not letting them crop the first year, anyway, this is the bed of those first year strawberries bought from Aldi last year that not only provided a crop of strawberries, but went on to produce a 'crop' of runners to be potted up. Some will be planted out into beds grown through Mypex membrane (like in the pic), the remainder will be sold.

Do you transplant from those small pots into bigger ones or keep them in small pots?

Some will be planted into bigger pots, others will be planted in open ground to grow on, the remainder will be sold for others to follow those options.

P.S. @Snowbaby if you open a new GC tab using Google Chrome on your tab 3, do you get an excessive amount of 'Sky'? I'm considering adding this to the list of forum software problems.
