I walked around downtown HongKong as Merlin with a bunch of chums. I've also gone to a 'party' in Salalah as a colostomy bag:yikes: Cheers, Tony.

I had to read that twice to work out what they were. Thought I'd been missing something all these years.

I'm not a great one for fancy dress but if it becomes necessary I've got a pirate outfit stashed away and also an Anne Boleyn outfit because I was going on a school Tudor day and fancied making the hat.

Not a patch on a colostomy bag, though.

are you telling me "fancy dress" means costume party???? Honey, my husband and I won two years ago. We go to a huge one every year. 400 people. We have themes each year.

I've been to a lot of fancy dress parties and we, also, used to wear fancy dress every Christmas Eve at work. Customers used to turn up just to see what we were wearing!

Some were very simple and very easy to make myself, such as:

a biker (borrowed a jacket, used stick on tattoos etc.)

a pirate (eye patch, head scarf, scarf around my waste, shirt with wide sleeve, made a parrot out of some odd green material and pinned it to my shoulder, and already had a sword)

a monk (very easy to buy a large, scrap, piece of heavy brown material and turn it into a robe - hole for head and very big floppy sleeves - and white heavy duty curtain cord for the waist)

a rubic cube (a big cardboard box with large holes for arms, and painted like a rubic cube)

Wurzel Gummidge (old hat, straw, tatty old clothes cut and torn)

            Lots of others :blue thumb:

I've also hired some costumes for parties

A shaggy dog - including head :snork:

and things such as this from about 50 years ago! :heehee:

Great costume @shiney and I love the squaddie too @Lolimac
I have the sewing machine out and ready so I can make a costume rather than buy or hire. I want comfortable :old: but fun ideally. :)

Yes, We call them Costume Parties here. Now that we are talking the same language. We also are getting ready for our Costume Party. It will be held May 17th, in Key West , Florida. about 400 people show up all dressed. Its on a beach, with wonderful tables and lots of food and booz. Live band. Husband is working on his now. Mine is being made by, someone. The theme is "into the blue" or any mysteries of the deep blue sea. So that is very wide open. We won two years ago, the prize was a $2.600.00 silver coin found in the ocean part of the Atocha wreck. That year husband shipped most of his costume down in boxes. This year, who knows. He is going for a seahorse, has to make the head etc. It is a lot of fun seeing everyone again, each year we go and have a week to catch up. And rest for me, and gathering freckles.

Have to tell you ---MEN---that costume on my husband was a Chick magnate. After the party, it is a tradition that a small group of us, aboiut 20 walk Duval street in Key West. Stopping in at a few bars along the way, hearing some good bands etc. Well, the girls could not keep their hands off my husband, had to take a pic with him and hug up on him etc. I am just smerking, thinking his age. But he was having a good time. Such a good time, and too much drink that he decided to moon right on Duval street. Have that pic somewhere, a friend took.
This was a fun costume to make buy the way. When we got down there, we got a face painter to paint his face, she came over to where we were staying and took about an hour to put his face on.
Washing it off at 4 AM was a treat.

I got the tie dye shirt from a guy who makes them. then I made the hat from multicolored feather boa sewen on a simple white cotton cap. sewed feathers to the shirt, and got his face painted. What you don't see is his straw skirt. And blue eyelashes are hard to see.
