    Hi
I wonder if anyone can identify this please?? It's got a dark purple flower with a really woody root! And if anyone has any advice on how to get rid of it, it would be much appreciated!! It's currently managing to grow in my path so there's no way of digging it out....and the roots are so large they're starting to push my paving up :-(! Amy help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Quite pretty but I agree with joolz68 it does spread very quickly - to stop it spreading remove seedlings as soon as they appear.

Years ago somebody planted one in their garden and now it's growing all along my street at the back of the pathway against walls and railings. If you don't kill it, the roots then get a real grip and then I've had to use a hammer and an old wood chisel to chop them out.

I agree it's Valerian and I'm struggling to keep it at bay in my garden. Try spraying it with a systemic weedkiller like Round-up. Round-up contains glyphosate which will kill just about anything it touches so be careful of 'drift' onto other plants or lawns.
