    hi,
i have bought a house with quite a large very busy garden, ive done alot of the removing of things but now its time to start tidying up,the first 2 areas are quite small, about 1m x 4m and 0.5m x 4m, and both have lots of weed and one has a rose bush. i want to turf them both but want to make sure i prepare the ground properly. i have removed the rose and cut the main root about 2ft into the ground,is that low enough? and how do i preprare the rest of it to make sure the weeds dont grow back,i was thinking of removing 6 inches of soil then putting a new top soil on,does this sound right? any help appreciated!

    Terry

    Hi Terry,

Glad to have a fellow Northamptonshire peep among the following here.

I am not sure what you mean by a large busy garden and that you have done a lot of removing things.

If you just want grass, remove thoroughly everything else, get the soil to a nice tilth, then either sow grass seed or buy 'turfs' from a nearby stockist. You cannot get any guarantees against weeds, especially in a lawn, and infact they are a constant battle for gardeners.

There will be better peeps along to give you better answers....

    Best of luck

I think you only need one more post and you will be able to post photos - makes it easier for others to give help, plus we are a nosy bunch

Sounds to me as though you are on the right track though.

        Welcome Terry :)

Just want to ask: when you say you have bought a house .. how recent it that? :noidea:

The rule of thumb when buying a property is to wait out the first year... just to see what comes up and where and then ... what to keep/remove.

For example: the rose - was it a bush, a climber, a rambler? Getting rid of it - is that really preferable to lawn?

If you wish to remove soil and replace it with fresh topsoil ... where are you sourcing your "topsoil" from? :noidea: When it comes to soil, all things are NOT equal. So, you may bring IN weeds/unfavourable with a new topsoil that you hadn't bargained for (and could prove time consuming to rectify).

Just my knee jerk random thought :)
