This sort of thing interests me. Sorry:)

Some scientists have found evidence of complex carbon based molecules out in space.

On its own it seems like merely a significant find, but add that to lots of other recent discoveries of planets that are 'just right' and new calculations showing an abundance of these things, I can't help wondering what sort of news my kids will be reading when they're my age.

I don't know about the sciencey stuff, but I do believe there is life on other planets/other galaxies. Given how many there are out there (and we probably only know about a fraction of them), surely we can't be the only planet to have intelligent life?

There's 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe each averaging 100 thousand million stars, so the chances of there not being life on other planets are pretty remote.

Has anyone else notice that ufo sightings are up recently ? :th scifD36:

I 99.9% agree, but there is one little thing that might potentially make our little rock the home of the most advanced and diverse life in the universe.

We're told that the universe is something like 16 billion years old. We're also told that our little bit of the universe formed very early on, not long after elements like iron came into existence. So if earth is a relatively old planet, orbiting a relatively old sun, and its still taking all these billions of years for life here to reach the level its at, then maybe its quite possible that in much younger solar systems, if there is life, it might still be at the 'primordial soup' stage.

Well, the Earth is reckoned to be around 4.54 billion years old while the Universe, according to current thinking, is around 13.8 billion years old but with basically Trillions of stars out beyond our Solar system in other Solar Systems and that other Solar Systems are older than our Sun, I reckon the age of the Earth is still, astronomically speaking, quite young. The incomprehensible, to me, number of Galaxies beyond our own Milky Way, which itself has around 200 to 400 Billion stars in it, is according to current estimates over 500 Billion!!. But since we can only see a minute fraction of the Universe that's a guess at best.
According to the latest research comparing the ratios of hydrogen isotopes over time some of the water in our oceans is older than our Sun!!! NASA now believes that there's water just about everywhere in the Universe in one form or another either on Planets, Comets, Asteroids etc.
The furthest Star from Earth known to us is "just" 13 Billion Light Years away....since a Light Year is around 6 Trillion miles you do the maths!!:heehee: But that means the light from those Galaxies left them 8 Billion years before our Sun and planets were formed:doh::hate-shocked:
Now, I'm a Doubter of many things but the sheer unbelievable vastness of the Universe convinces me that the mathematical odds of Life other than us, more advanced or less advanced, is so high in my opinion as it to be a certainty.
