My gran used to put threepenny bits in the Christmas pud back in the day. A sixpence would have been regarded as far too extravagant.

Still got a load of them somewhere.

Andrew Mills, The Royal Mint’s Director of Circulating Coin, said, “The development of our iSIS project has enabled us to develop a new generation of low cost, high security, plated coin with multiple levels of banknote-strength security built in. It will enable enhanced security throughout the cash cycle, from vending, parking, retail, and banking.”

Low cost seems to be the important bit, yet another piece of plated rubbish, we used to laugh at foreign coins years ago, because they were made out of aluminum and were cheap.

Ours at least used to feel like real money.

The old threpeny bit was at least brass, and the one before that I think might have been silver.

Bit of an unfortunate project name, given current tensions globally?

Funny, I thought earlier that I had some thrupenny bits coming......

So is the taxpayer going to pay for this with the old or the new £1 coin?

Up until 1921 Silver coins were sterling silver. Now even the copper has been taken out of the small change. Our coinage is worthless.

At skool I made a ring out of a pre 1921 2 bob bit. Drilled the middle, opened it up and re formed it so that the writing was on the inside, silver soldered it and shaped it so it looked like a wedding ring.

Accidentally got engaged to an elderly neighbour when I showed it to her. She put it on her third finger and started making plans for the wedding

She'm probably still wearing it

Neither - it will be deducted electronically from your earnings at source as a new H&H tax.... H&H being Happiness & Hilarity; according to a recent study by the Universtiy of Doom, headed by Dr K Illjoy, too much of either Happiness or Hilarity is not good for us and too much of both together is expected to cost the NHS billions in repairs to facial muscles and split sides.

In line with all other polices, and to ease the burden on the NHS, whilst 'encouraging' us to refrain, taxation is deemed the most effective way.

The newly designed coin will mean the Supermarkets will either have to invest in a new coin receiver for their trolleys or leave them unchained.:dunno::doh:

Agreed Woo, and it also proves that fashion goes around and around....from one of my favourite coins of decades ago to this new £1 coin when probably the old Thrupenny bit was relatively worth then about as much as the £1 is now!!!:dunno::heehee:

For 35 years I worked in the Gaming Machine industry, it cost the company millions to fit new coin acceptors, then they introduced the new £2 coin, it was not an adjustment job it was new coin acceptors again
Add to the above all the parking meters, stamp issuing machines, coke and food machines etc
the Gov is on a nice little earner, all the tax and VAT on new machines and peoples wages to go around fitting them
